Under Popular Demand.....The Karo Syrup Tek!!!

For popular demand I give you the Karo TEK!!!It is much better than honey becasue it is clear so you can tell if there is a contam or not. I innoced mine w/ less than 1 cc of hutula that I had saved up and 7-9 days later it was done. Let it sit, dont move it around like they tell you to. I leave mine and it will just grow one giant mass of mycelium that will take up about 1/2 of the 1/2 pint jar. Of course you dont need that much but I did it. Steam steri not that much but steam for 20-30 min the most. If any more it will carmelize. It makes it a yellowish tint. It has sugars in it and nothing likes sugar better than spores and contams. Be very clean with this one. Its not that hard to do and im going to make a tek here at the Shroomery about it. When done stick needle in and suck in and out. It will break out the matter and evenly distruibute. Then suck up and innoc. Of couse since i dont use spores any more just Liquid Culture I have abunch of vials that I keep left overs in. Not only does it make things alot better but you dont have to wait for germination. Its just straight mycelium. It grows fast!
This is what I do and I have great results. Take hot water. Mix 100 ml with 2 teaspoon of karo syrup.I like more becasue it make stronger growth. Just put 1 hole in middle for innoc. Stir Karo with hot water very very well. Steri no longer than 25 min. Let cool over night by itself. next day just take foil off and inject 1cc of soultion into the jar. Put in incubator. About 1 week 1/2 later take it out. Put up to light, and check for any growth other than the myceluim. This is not hard to spot becasue mycelium is white and the liquid is very very clear. Once done it will be a gaint mass of myclium. Take foil off and suck mycelum though the syringe and out several times to mix the mixture. Once an even amount suck it up and innoc. Unless you have vials it is not good for storing. Good luck! I love you all at the shroomery and love to spread this amongst you all! If you need any help or ques just PM me. I have found the original tek from http://www.nansnook.com/archives/3462.html

Damn it why didn't you post this about 3 hours ago!?! j/k
I just finished trying this as it seems like a really good idea but I made it up as I went along based upon some feed back from other posts. It ended up being exactly as you mentioned (you're version is very nice and covers everything). I used golden corn syrup since that's what I had on hand. Any problems other than optical clarity? Other than that I will do as you mentioned, leave it the freak alone.....

Yeah its very effective. Take in mind that you will have ALOT of soulution. And it isnt good to store unless you get some vials or it wikll last a while in the fridge. Good Luck to All! Yes I have pictures I am making a tek that includes pics of every thing!

Why can't you store it in a syringe?
And do you store the vials in fridge, or can they be stored at room temp?

it can, but not for as long . eventually the mycelium will run out of food . seal the jar air tight, put it in the refer., and it will last 2 mos. or more .

So I basically tried this tek and have a little question. I used 1 cup of water and 1 TBLS golden corn syrup and added some spores from a print. I just took a look at them 1 day later and noticed tiny white fibers on the bottom of the jar. I take it this is a good sign? BTW the fibers seem to be heavy and like to settle to the bottom. Assuming this is a desired event, how long (apx of course) until I can inoculate? Is there a sign I should look for?

i have seen spores germinate in k/w in as little as 12 hr .
little white specks that settle to the bottom tells me you have soft water .
in a day or so it will begin to clump . when it gets the size of a quarter, it's ready .(usually about 5 days}

botanisthype's Q was never really answered....if you still care or hanvt noticed....you steam the jars for a bit just like the PF tek...then scrape spores or inject..IMO...its much more cleaner than the normal syringe fillings...asides from the disadvantage of shelf life. But if your not looking to change strains or just to continue a grow seems like the best way!

Hmm didnt see it there. I totally resent from scraping spores in anything unless you have a flowhood. Not worth the risk of contam. And If anybody does care I have a 1 gallon container of Karo going right now. Yes it is growing.

quick ? on this tek.
first of all do you use a 1/2 pint with no holes in the lid or with.
would not an open hole in the top with no protective layer (such as verm) let in contaims.
and a closed top would not let the myc breath would it, or is that nesseccery here.
i know little of this idea and may have asked redundant ?'s but thanks for filling me in.
2nd ? what would be the proper temp to store this at for the myc to spread.

I use an old pickle jar with a small hole in the lid for a wad of polyfil. It works great. I also have a chunk of broken glass in the jar to help break up the mycelium.

I got: 4- 1/2 pint jars ,1- 1 quart jar, 1-Gallon container going right now. I put hole in ther eto innoc. Dont see the use for broken glass when I just suck it in and out of a syringe for a good even substrate. Also breaking it up when its still growing. The mycelium has to re-heal its self when you break it up. Just let it do its thing and when you have a good big ass ball of myecilum. Do the dirty.

from my observation, 1/2 pint jars works well . 1/8" hole in the lid for inoculation, and tape it so ants don't get in . if you only use 100 ml. k/w per 1/2 pint, there is plenty of air in there, and gas exchange take care of itself .

It's been about 6 days for my friend and there is a little ball of white fuzz forming. he noticed a black particle in there, but it may be from the spore syringe .... it was packed with visible particles.
I had to try the fresh mush/peroxide trick and have a couple of oyster pieces working .... no contams yet, so I'm hopeful.
Thanks for sharing your experience Dean!

WOW. I read all this great stuff and thought "why not?" Turns out to be the best thing since PF cakes made themselves known. The Karo syrup tek has completely revolutionized the inoculation process. Here's a hearty "thank you" to all who have posted in this thread.
If anyone reading this is looking to take a step up from purchasing syringes etc (or turn one quality syringe into many, many more!!!!) ... I highly recommend this karo tek. All the info you need is right here above...and it works so beautifully. And it's fun to watch the stuff grow before your eyes too!
be well

Yes, you can PC it. MycoCake Eater said, "Steri no longer than 25 min."
But, I've even screwed it up and let it go 45 min to an hour with no harm. I'd go with what the man says, however, since following his advice has led to great results.
As to your question about sucking up mycelium in a syringe...the mycelium forms a loose ball-like structure that is easily sucked up. Some people shake it first and some have put in a piece of glass to aid in the shaking (all of which I read above). It's hard to screw this one up, man. Go for it!

I've actually seen ppl put marbles in liquid mycelium teks, seems to work really well to stir up the mycelium, i'm a little skeptical about use'n a syringe to suck the solution out and squirt it back in to mix it up, but i'll definitely take your word for it.

Thoreau once said "Simplify, simplify". Why can't growing 'shrooms be easier? I don't want to use corn syrup, I don't WANT to spend weeks and weeks and... *gripe whine piss and moan*. I hate this stuff. I need to make a tek. I'll call it "Buy Them From That One Guy On The Corner Of Sixth And Pike, He Looks Like He Might Sell Mushies".
I wish I was cool.
'Shroom on.

MycoCakeEater, when are u going to have your tek finished. i've never attempted this or the honey tek. kinda curious and anxious to try. It seems like it would be a easy and effective way to innoculate a bulk substrate.

i personally like the honey tek better, all i do is boil the water put the syrup in and 2 days later i see a nice liquid culture developing. and i attribute my success to the fact that honey is naturally repelling of contaminants and shit like that. havent had a contam yet. and have done it 7 times with 4 diffrent strains.

Has anyone tried using this tec to just grow mycelium? I'm thinking of combining this with the psilocin extraction tec and bypassing shrooms altogether. Liquid culture should give you pure mycelium you can filter out, dry and extract. That would avoid having to case substrate and produce shrooms and would also be better than extracting from cakes since there would be no grain or corn to get in the way. I might combine those two with the coffee tec and see what happens.
What happens if you let this go long? Does the mycelium stop growing when the sugar runs out? Does it form solid masses or is it mostly a soup?

It grows so slow in liquid culture, it would take months just to get any significant ammount, let alone as much as is in a cake...

Has anybody tried this tek AND the 9er tek? I'm going to be starting my second batch of cakes soon am looking for a better alternative to regular spore syringes.
Couldn't you just take a freshly birthed jar with a little myc on the bottom and put in some karo/distilled h20/h202 solution in the jar and let that grow for a few days in the inc and use that?

From what i've read you can put colonized grain in a karo jar and it will grow, i would think it leaves more possibilities for contamination though...
