I believe I've got a Gymnopilus here... + a pretty Weilii.

I saw this giant orange cluster driving down the highway. I immediately pulled off, grabbed the cluster and analyzed it and noticed some bluing at the base of the cluster as pictured. I've also included a couple pictures of what I think is one of the coolest looking weilii I've found to date. Anyway, please help with an exact ID, and I'll get a print going in the meantime...

I'm not sure as to what level or whatever, they vary a lot from my experience.


I'm really curious about this possible Gym... anyone? The print came out orange to rusty orange.

i had a nice visual of ladle veering of the highway going 70mph as he notices an orange weilii looking patch off the side of the road....only to find possible gyms (nice find if it is!!).

i can't tell you how many mailboxes i have almost taken out while going down the road looking at front lawns ;-)

it tis a great hobby!

The Gymnopilus look to me to be close to Gymnopilus spectabilis.

The one time I ever found an active Gymnopolis(which I suspect was likely spectabilis) they were physically identical to your collection. The only area they showed any bluing reaction was on the mycelium inbetween the stems at the base of the cluster. I never bioassayed any, but I know they were definitley active, and the shitty part was I never got pics :frown: Nice find, I find weilii with that symetrical ripple from time to time, let me dig up a pic, its very close to your mushroom in appearance. Isn't the best part of hunting weilii is that you never know what weird looking form you might find next! They are all so different and unique. I bet if more study was done we could legitimently seperate these forms and give them a valid variation title, like Psilocybe weilii var ripple :smile: Or something maybe a bit more scientific and latin :smile:

Thanks for the confirmation and compliments. I've had my eye out for gyms for the last month or so, and am glad to of found some. Any ideas how to solve a maggot problem?

LK, that's a good looking weilii too, same ripple action just a different umbo. Is that from your woodland patch? Anyway, I'll give you a call sometime soon. Hope all is well.

BTW it's just one patch that is fruiting here. It died off for all of July, but just picked up again.

Im always weary of gymnopilus - especially the varieties that only stain at the mycelial base. We have a lot of Gym. Junonius in australia that doesnt stain blue and by some reports is a great way to get a really bad gut ache.
Other varieties in Australia like Gym.purpuratus and Gym.dilepis stain very blue and are quite active but only in a classic psilocybian way.

I have had a couple Members from Oz pm me and ask lots of questions about the Gyms I find here in Texas vs the Gyms they find.

Its so stinking hard to tell with these mushrooms. The Gyms I have found have all been Very active to Slightly active.

But some of the folks in Oz. have reported stomach pains contributed to Gyms..
After a few months of reading and searching and reading and searching I have come to the conclusion that we have many Active Gyms here in South Texas where the same mushroom a couple states over is completely non Active..

Its like we have an invisible line across the US that has Active mushrooms on one side and Non Active on the other..
I have never found Gyms outside this state and all my knowledge comes from what I have figured out on my own and from Field Guides and the Internet but I will say that the Gyms I have found here are defiantly Active and No discomfort was experienced :wink:

Hey this is really fucking weird that you dug this post up. It was actually a post I put up when I went as Ladle or Ladle2. I had all my shit deleted, and I just reregistered for the first time in a couple years, and here this post is. Very interesting, since I just posted some old pictures from that time period today in the "blue weilii patch...." thread on the second page.
