Tarzan and the Elephants

Watched a portion of the original 1930s movie Tarzan with Johnny Weissmuller. It was obvious that most was filmed in California with patched in rear projection scenes of Africa.
What totally cracked me up - and yet I doubt most people would not even notice, is that the scenes with Weissmuller filmed live next to real elephants, all of the elephants had giant fake plastic ears. I pondered for a moment and then realized they were Indian elephants who have much smaller ears than Africsn elephants and that must have been all that was available locally.
The point is, that was we grow older and hopefully wiser, many things (*cough* UFOs *cough*) that previously easily fooled us now become readily apparent for what they are.

African elephants are very difficult to train compared to indian elephants.

Isn't that largely because they have been semi-domesticated for thousands of years?

In this clear publicity still, the fake ears are obvious, but on the grainy, poorly focused film it almost works.

Don't know. I do remember reading that the African elephant is more agressive.

That loin cloth looks fake too.

Poor elephant probably still has glue on his smaller ears. I feel sorry for someone who has to see terrible things like this in old movies. Animal abuse is serious business. So is finding the song Tusk.
Whew.

Those screams were certainly authentic.
Of course, every UFO nut always overlooks the fact that the Original Kenneth Arnold sighting was not of saucer-shaped objects, but rather wing-shaped objects that 'skipped like saucers across the sky'. The fact thet the sighting that started the craze turned out to be migrating geese and were not discs, should not put any nutter off the trail.
