Existentialism
    #1810405 - 08/13/03 06:47 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

does the existentialist outlook have to be so down? not all of it is pessimistic, but a great deal of it tends to lean that way...is there no way of creating positivity while also question all there is, was, and every will be?

No, it doesn't have to be.

There are ways of creating posativity.

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

It all depends on which way you look at it.

it's supposed to inspire peace of mind and commitment to values, since there are no universals to adhere to, you are free to treat your values as absolute.

The ultimate meaning of our being can only be fulfilled in the paradoxical leap beyond the tragic-demonic frustration. It is a leap from our side, but it is the self-surrendering presence of the Ground of Being from the other side.

Existentialist nausea, eh?
This such a common ailment among philosophy newbies (no offense).

Too much Sartre all at once, maybe?

Try 'The Myth of Sisyphus', by Camus. He tries to prove that suicide is not a legitimate choice, based on the abusrdity of life as we know it. Kierkegaard is good too, if you like paradoxical god talk. Get off the depressing stuff (esp. anything German or Russian)

Actually, he says that suicide IS a legitimate choice, but is not the best one.

Is this a little ad hominem against Nietzsche or Dostoevsky?

If so, it's unfounded.

My opinion, my generalization, and I stand by it. I've found the majority of Dostoevsky to be depressing as fuck, not to mention Kafka or Hesse. Not to say that Sartre and Camus aren't a bit of a downer as well. But in the end I think all existentialists reveal themselves to be optimists, usually by virtue of the depressing philosophies they preach. Its an optimism achieved through paradox, confusion, doubt, nihilism, pain and/or suffering, but its still a positive perspective. Unfortunately, its not always immediately apparent.

So the short answer is no, I don't have anything personal against any existentialist, not even fuckin' Neitzsche.

Hooah!
I appreciate the "fuckin' Nietzsche" comment... such visceral terms cohere well with Nietzsche.
