After being hit by a pitch, Padres Carlos Quentin breaks Dodgers Zach Grienke's collarbone. This has been receiving as much attention on Sportcenter as if somebody pitched a perfect game. Baseball brawls are usually so phony, like play fighting. Real damage was done here. My impressions. While Dodgers swarmed to the mound to protect their pitcher, they didn't do a very good job of it. I couldn't tell if Grienke's injury came from the first collision or a little later when Quentin tackled him. The tackle could have been avoided, but the Dodgers who got their first didn't tackle Quentin. He has an NFL body 6:4 240. The catcher also didn't grab Quentin as he started walking towards the mound. The reporters said this was because the game situation (1 run game, 3-2 count) meant Grienke would not hit him intentionally, so the catcher didn't think Quentin was serious.
Dodgers star Matt Kemp confronted Quentin in the runway postgame and they had to be separated by the police in the parking lot. But during the play he couldn't get to the mound on time because he plays outfield. These teams play in the same division, and will face each other many times. L.A. manager Don Mattingly is very pissed off. I am sure the Dodgers will retaliate and throw at Quentin, and I would bet they will throw at his head. More suspensions to follow. They will probably have to wait awhile because the umpires will be issuing warnings before the game starts. However I don't think they will have one of their two aces do it. Grienke has a $140 million contract, and he is the #2 starter. Maybe they will bring up a minor league pitcher with a wicked fastball and control problems. Plausible deniability. I saw Quentin play almost every day when he was on the White Sox. He is somewhere between very intense and crazy (at times). He lunges over the plate on every swing, and has been hit well over 100 times, but ESPN said he has never been hurt from this. But during the 08 playoff run when he was an MVP candidate, he tried to break his bat over his wrist after striking out and broke his wrist instead. Ironically, he is a Stanford grad.
When Quentin started walking towards the mound, Grienke said something to him and then Carlos went on a mad charge. I wonder if we will ever find out what he said. ESPN said it is pretty much obligatory for a pitcher to talk some shit if a batter starts walking toward the mound, but I think Quentin was the wrong guy to mess with.
I haven't seen anybody get a pitcher like this since Albert (certifiably angry for life) Belle. He got hit by pitch earlier. On the next at bat he flied out. He ran the ball out at medium speed, but when he got to first he made a quick turn, charged the mound and smashed the pitcher with a vicious body block. The experts say the only reason he didn't make the Hall of Fame was his personality.

Set an NCAA single-game record when he was hit by a pitch five times at Florida State (2/9/02).
There is a rule in baseball about not making an effort to avoid being hit.
http://www.qcbaseball.com/baseball_rules/hit_by_pitch1.aspx
Quote:
It may seem obvious when a batter is hit by a pitch and awarded first base, but there are some cases where a base may not be awarded.
If the ball touches the batter as the batter swings at the ball. This basically means that if the batter is swinging at the ball and the act of swinging has caused the ball to hit the batter, then the ball is a strike. Example: Batter swings and the ball hits him on the forearm as he's swinging. The ball is dead and it is a strike. If the hitter has two strikes, it is strike 3 not a foul ball. This isn't called often as most of the time the player will stop the swing and be hit by the ball. In that case most umpires will determine that the player is attempting to get out of the way by not continuing the swing. So, even though the act of swinging has caused the ball to hit the batter, the umpire may determine that player attempted to get out of the way and award the batter first base. The ball touches the batter in the strike zone. Example: Batter is fooled by a curve ball and ducks. He is hit in the head, but his head is over the plate and in the strike zone. The correct call is a strike. If the batter makes no attempt to get out of the way of the ball. This normally occurs at higher levels of baseball where a player may "take one for the team". Make sure to check your rule book as some leagues will allow this. What is not allowed is for a player to intentionally get in the way of the ball. For example a player cannot turn his shoulder in towards the plate for the purpose of getting hit by the ball. If the ball hits the bat in the act of swinging and then touches the batter. The correct ruling is a foul ball and the batter should not be awarded first base.
These rules have been ignored for far too long. Quentin should be suspended until Greinke can play again

Yeah I agree with this. It was 3-2, a close game, it doesn't make sense for Greinke to go for Quentin. Sure Greinke might've called him a bitch but whatever, Quentin made the choice to go at the pitcher. He steps towards the pitcher first.

ESPN says 5 games pretty mandatory but maybe 7, which was Tim Kurchin's opinion. I say he gets more than that, but not for as long as Grienke is out. I don't know what kind of precedent MLB has for increasing suspensions when serious injury is caused.
There were a couple of funny things in Zappa's links. His Stanford U profile says his favorite pro team is the Dodgers. Another link said Quentin lead the league in hit by pitch the last 2 years, but last year he did it while appearing in only 86 games
I also saw a video on Fox Sports West on this play. They did the video in stop action. In one clip the catcher is trying to pull him down from behind, and Grienke definitely has a hold on Quentin's crotch. Can't say I blame him, but I never saw that in fast motion.

I think if you get intentionally pegged with a pitch you should be able to take the fucking bat to the pitcher's head. Quentin shouldn't be suspended Grienke should be. Fuck his collarbone. You throw a hardball at someone on purpose you deserve what you get.

I'm glad my braves are doing well. I was a bit worried at the start of the season.

I'm a Braves fan as well. They're a legitimately excellent ball-club. I am somewhat concerned about the durability of our starting pitchers, however. Unfortunately it seems that the Nationals are a little bit better than the Braves. That means that the Braves will be forced to win a wild card spot for the one game play off. Needless to say I am not a fan of the new wild card arrangement.
