I thought this is important enough to deserve its own thread, so that it might more attentiona fedback on the boards.
You all should really discover a little something called SAM-e. SAM-e quite simply KICKS DEPRESSION's butt. I have found it to be so far more effctive than other thing I' prett, incluing 5htp.
Its better than anything else I have tried. Its also very good for you and your brain. It helps detoxify your body and liver, and helps to restore your brain's chemistry, especially dopamine and seritonin. SAM-e is short for a long chemical name....a chemical that is found in ever cell in the body, especially the brain from what I understand. Without SAM-e, your brain and body wouldnt work right, and I have read that SAM-e deficiancy is one of the causes several kinds of mental disorders including depression. It is what helps your body's cells to function properly. One other great thing about it is that it works very quickly, often within one or two days of use compared to other anti-depressiants which can take weeks to fully kick in. Even when I'm coming off prescription speed (Dexedrine), I will take about 800 mgs of SAM-e, and no joke...it almost totally saves me from the horrible come down side of amphetamines. Note...you must take SAM-e with plenty of B-complex vitamins because they are what help it work...especially vitamin B-12. I have read that SAM-e can actually be bad for you unless its taken with B vitamins, so keep that in mind.
The only problem with it is the price. Unfortunately its not cheap stuff. But if you are looking for the ultimate weapon agaisnt depression (in my experience) its worth the money....every penny.
I also have been on Paxil and 5htp many times. I still take Paxil right now to help combate my anxiety and OCD. But SAM-e works TONS better than Paxil or anything else I have tried. Its also something you cant very easily overdose from or get too much of, provided you are taking it with plenty of B complex.
So check it out, and LET IT BE KNOWN THAT SAM-E KICKS THE SHIT OUT OF DEPRESSION. If depression was like a real monster, then it would probably tremble with fear at the very mention of SAM-e. I can just imagine a TV commercial using that idea. HAHA,

Heh, yea I can imagine it too, almost like the listerine pocket packs commericals, where the person shoots 1 at the monster and it's head explodes.

You know what really works for me?
An herbal supplement called St. John's Wort Extract 300mg.
(standardized to contain 0.3% Hypercin, 0.9mg)
After doing some research on related sites, I discovered that for me and many other people taking 3 caps once every 24 hours (instead of 1 cap three times a day) can help keep one a "happy camper". It honestly works for me better than anything else I have tried. Also it's over the counter in the USA and sold in Wallmart.

I've been using SAM-e for several weeks, and i agree with everything said in the original post. St. John's Wort is alright, but it is an SSRI (can be dangerous), and it has not been nearly as effective. Although i've never suffered from clinical depression, i do have mood swings, or days where im just plain tired and SAMe has really made an enormous difference.

I just bought some SAM-e from HEB.
It was over-the-counter and cost $18 for 18 pills. They were double strength.
Regular strength = 200 mg.
Double strength = 400 mg.
Recommended dosage is 400 mg...once a day.
BTW, I probably won't see any effects for at least several days.

SAMe is good stuff. I was taking 400mg in the morning and 400mg at nighttime. (as directed by my doctor) I stopped taking it after maybe a month because I didn't think it was doing anything. After reading this thread I realized I should have been taking B complex with it as well.
Im gonna give that a shot. BTW, Im on St Johns Wort now and as far as I know it's perfectly safe to take both. I dont think SAMe affects your serotonin levels. Im gonna go read up on it now to make sure.

I thought I might resurrect this thread considering I tried 800mg today. I think my dosage was a little too high because I got kind of antsy but it defiantly works wonders. It is subtle and yet works fast and as far as I can tell makes me feel great. Anyone considering going on perceptions for a mental disorder should defiantly tr this first. I will post back later with more of my results

I've been on SAMe for about 2 weeks now. I take 800 mg twice a day. I always take the first dose first thing upon waking up and I always take it with a b vitamin complex. I always try to not eat for a few hours before and after the dose.
Right from day one I noticed a substantial mood lift. I have noticed a reduction in anxiety, increased comfort in social and work settings, more energy, more focus and improved performance and concentration.
Often times I actually feel high from SAMe. It's a bit different from any high I've had before.
It's like a high energy body rush and a physical brain rush with elevated mood, not intense but very noticeable.
The best result I've had from SAMe is I have completely stopped drinking alcohol. I find SAMe is an effective replacement for alcohol and definitely can help if you are trying to quit.
As an added bonus SAMe is very good for the liver and can actually prevent or reverse alcohol induced liver damage.
And it supports joint health and reduces aches and pains.
Finally it metabolizes into glutathione , the master antioxidant.
It also plays a role in the endogenous production of DMT.
In short I love it and plan to take it indefinitely. Note that I do not suffer from depression but SAMe takes me from ok to good or from good to great, emotionally.
I have taken as much as 2000 mg in one day with no ill effects.
A final point, the effects are cumulative and get better with each passing day of taking it.
Expensive yes but my favourite supplement and I have taken many.

Hi! Very safe, very few side effects. If you take it too late in the day you may have trouble sleeping. At high doses you may experience 'excessively elevated mood'. (A good thing in my opinion). If you identify as having bipolar disorder it may induce a manic phase. But generally the side effects are rare and minor. Certain brands such as the Walmart brand may cause stomach discomfort but this is not serious . Doses as high as 3600 mg a day have been used in studies with no ill effect
Just don't use with an MAOI or SSRI
