There's not much you can do about that...
Yes there is! Give em a helmet like the ones batters wear, at least that would provide more protection than a hat.

So you say you're from SC?
lol j/k. you do have a point but there's not really much to be done about it.

I heard that the league was looking into it last season, but I really don't think they'll do much about it until someone gets seriously hurt.
Yeah I'm from SC. Not SC as in South Carolina though I live on the west coast.

I just think a helmet would obstruct their view too much. It sucks because pitching is f'ing dangerous, especially against the best hitters on the planet. Heck batting is dangerous enough, too. One kid like ten years ago got plunked on the head his first MLB at-bat and the injury was so severe he never got another one.

Except when they do. It's an inherent risk that necessarily comes with the game as it is normally played. Of course baseball is hell of a lot safer than many (most?) professional sports.

Yeah I think it's safer too only thing is the long season. I'm sure playing all those games take a toll physically.

Well yeah pitchers are more prone to injury that any other athlete. But they're not going to suffer brain damage or long term cognitive impairment from pitching. They maybe suffer from pain for the rest of their lives though.

Taking a line drive to the head is pretty bad though. I can imagine someone easily becoming a vegetable if they get hit on the right spot

Pitchers are more prone to injury because what they do is completely unnatural. Batters are in more danger of getting hit in the head than pitchers.

I was just reading the story about Kevin Youklis signing with a Japanese Team. His agent said he got 4 million base and a possible additional million based on incentives, including walks. They said incentive clauses for walks are prohibited in MLB. Does anybody know why? It seems strange in this era of moneyball GMs focusing a lot of attention on on base pct.

Just a guess but that provision for walks may not be allowed in MLB just because hitters holding out for walks would stretch the game out even more increasing the ennui.

I think you're only allowed to have incentives for plate appearances and games played and shit like that. No actual stats because they think, rightly so, that players will adjust their game to get the check rather than to improve the team's chances of winning.

That's the story so far. I'm surprised they wouldn't take the cash. He's gone after next year and they'll get nothing

I guess a season of tanaka in the NPB isn't worth 20 mil. I wonder what it is worth though. I don't know about if/how a WAR stat is compiled for that league which would be how one figures that out.

MLB has approved the use of instant replay. Unfortunately it's not allowed for the "neighborhood play" at 2nd base on double plays. They're afraid that would lead to more contact breaking up double plays. That used to be considered fundamental baseball. Players took pride in it, and if you didn't do it your manager would be super pissed. I guess that replays will be used for the "phantom tag", so that's good. They are currently not going to ban collisions at home plate, which was expected to be a new rule. They could not reach an agreement with the union on it. Not sure how that is a labor relations issue.
Some sports website (can't remember who) is showing a top 5 collisions at the plate video.

Dodgers sign Clayton Kershaw for 215 million for 7 years; highest ever for a pitcher.
His stats and accomplishments are incredible, he's only 25 years old, and they say he's a great guy too.
But still it's got to be scary to be the GM and make this deal. When do these mega-deals ever work out? Off the top of my head the only one I can think of is Jeter. It's funny because the huge deals seem to pay off for the team in other sports way more than they do in baseball.
