Cubes and radioactivity
    #18085819 - 04/10/13 06:42 AM (11 years, 1 month ago)

It can be found on the web:
many mushroom-species derive their energy for growth not from light but from the background-radioactivity.
Does this apply also to cubes?

Anybody around having access to a sufficient source of radiation? Any having experience with this? Please someone make that experiment if you have access to a radiation-source and let us know!

They might respond very well to this in fruiting i think ... radiation should not be too low and not too high ... just a slight bit ... is there anything i can buy at the supermarket which is radioactive? There should be ... but i don't have a geiger-counter to find out ...

mushrooms absorb everything in a sense, that they need. Eating a mushroom that has been exposed to radiation means you will be poisioning yourself.
The mushrooms that seem to grow around the nuclear site Chernobyl are not to be eaten because of these radiation levels.

Mushrooms grow with no light what they need is in the ground BUT it also can come with trace elements(?). A reason why it is not advisable to go mushroom hunting along side of the road.

LOL, are you really that gullible?

Besides some lower microbes that utilize inorganic chemical sources, all biological energy on earth comes from sunlight.  Nothing has ever been scientifically shown to derive energy from any other types of radiation.

afaik there is some kind of microbe who gets his energy from radiation. Not in a direct way like light-harvesting enzymes but that radiation energy splits some molecules which can then be used by the bacteria.

Paul Stamets mentions in his TED talk "6 ways mushrooms can save the world" that we recently found out that mushrooms can dirive energy from radiation, much like plants get energy from the sun.

AFAIK there is a single paper that showed some increased growth with radiation exposure in some oddball fungi they found growing on some reactor wall.  Interesting for sure, but hardly conclusive evidence that they're actually deriving energy from it.

Kind of sad that based on almost nothing it's now all over the internet that mushrooms grow on radiation and people are fool enough to believe it.

Radiotrophic fungi are fungi which appear to use the pigment melanin to convert gamma radiation[1] into chemical energy for growth.
[...]
The exact biochemical processes in the suggested melanin-based synthesis of organic compounds or other metabolites for fungal growth, including the chemical intermediates (such as native electron donor and acceptor molecules) in the fungal cell and the location and chemical products of this process, are unknown.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiotrophic_fungus

A perfect example of how a simple observation leads to wild and unsupported speculation often masquerading as scientific fact.

Fact: Certain melanin producing fungi grow faster when exposed to radiation.

Unsupported speculation: Faster growth means they are obtaining energy from the radiation.

Using the same flawed reasoning would tell you that humans get their energy from growth hormone and plants derive energy from fertilizer.

It's certainly possible, but improbable based on current evidence, that this is happening.  There could be new research on this that I'm not aware of, but AFAIK there has never been any actual evidence that would say fungi can derive energy from radiation.

If anyone is aware of ACTUAL EVIDENCE that would support these claims then please post it.  Otherwise you're just polluting the internet with more nonsense and feeble minded speculation.

Melanin and ionizing radiation

Not implying anything, and didnt read the paper yet.

But it seem like its talking about the subject you guys were discussing

(Note) its not talking about radioactivity, but ionizing radiations

"Ionizing radiation" is what most people think of as "radiation".  Non-ionizing radiation is things like light, radio waves, microwaves, infrared heat radiation, etc..

From the paper...
Quote:

We hypothesized that ionizing radiation could change the electronic properties of melanin and
might enhance the growth of melanized microorganisms.

Principal Findings. Ionizing irradiation changed the electron spin resonance (ESR) signal of melanin, consistent with changes in electronic structure. Irradiated melanin manifested a 4-fold increase in its capacity to reduce NADH relative to non-irradiated melanin.

Conclusions. Exposure of melanin to ionizing radiation, and possibly other forms of electromagnetic radiation, changes its electronic properties. Melanized fungal cells manifested increased growth relative to non-melanized cells after exposure to ionizing radiation, raising intriguing questions about a potential role for melanin in energy capture and utilization.

Interesting stuff.  Seems that radiation will modify the electronic structure of melanin to make it more effective.  Weather or not it's actually capturing any physical energy from the radiation seems to still be an open question though.  Humans do better with sunlight because it catalyzes the production of vitamin D, but sunlight really isn't providing us any energy.

This has sparked my interest, thanks op. I dont know if you have read this but it seemed interesting/mildly redundant(to this post) http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/05/070522210932.htm
someone should definitely experiment with this.

it certainly applies to most aor even all yeast but do cubes respond? Others like oysters? Anyone knows for sure? Someone should try ...

Where are you getting yeast from?

No organism has ever been shown to derive energy from radiation, so why would you think cubes would?

Quote:

in the absence of radiation, some non-melanized fungi (that had been mutated in the melanin pathway) grew faster than their melanized counterparts.

It's equally plausible that radiation is simply reducing the downside to melanin production.

It would be pretty interesting if a radiation harvesting pathway were discovered, but it's really pretty pointless to us.  It's not like you can just put your trusty radiation lamp on them.

Have you read the article that i posted Fred?

From the paper "We measured a lower absolute uptake of 14C-acetate by wild type H99 compared to Lac(-) cells (Fig. 6c,d). There was no
incorporation of 14C-acetate into heat killed melanized or nonmelanized cells, which excludes the possibility that radiation
promoted the passive absorption of 14C-acetate on melanin.
Importantly, when melanized and non-melanized Lac(-) H99 cells
were incubated with 14C-acetate with and without radiation –
there was almost 3 times more incorporation of 14C-acetate intoirradiated melanized cells than into non-irradiated melanized cells, while the ratio of 14C-acetate incorporation into irradiated to nonirradiated Lac(-) cells was only slightly higher than 1 (Fig. 6c,d and e).

Overall, these results demonstrate that the presence of melanin contributes to the enhancement of cellular growth upon exposure to ionizing radiation in conditions of limited nutrients."

Melanin is an advantage to survive the ionizing radiation, why do you think spores walls are filled with that compound?

Its sure that an organism growth will be hindered when they produce it compared to others. But when there is radiation, i guess that they are the kings

Do you mean, like this BLACK yeast? Hortaea werneckii.

No clues about harvesting radiation energy through melanin though

Certainly intriguing stuff!  Nice to see some authors acknowledging that it raises "intriguing questions" rather than jumping into a rant about radiation farming on the way to mars like Dr. Arturo Casadevall.

Even ignoring the basically non-existent nutritional value of fungi, some would say those statements seem like irresponsible over-hyping of results to grab media attention.
