WBS question

One is preparing some wild bird seed by presently soaking ~600 ml in a pillowcase in water for 12 hours. Then one is letting the pillowcase hang until the water stops dripping.
After adding to the quart jar, should one add ~200 ml of water? Or would the soaking have provided enough H20 content?
One is concerned because of previous attempts where too much water was added. i.e. one did not let the grain drain before adding some water in the quart jar, resulting in rot.
So what one is basically asking is, even after soaking/draining, does one need to add the water to the jar?
Thank you ahead of time!

No, not usually. You will have to experiment in order to get the water content perfect. Try it without water first (only a soak), and see how it turns out after cooking. You may need to fiddle with it a bit, but its really the only way. Grain varies so much in the initial water content, and how much it can absorb so there is no way anyone can give you the perfect amount.
Shoot for 30-50% water content by weight. This can be calculated by baking the grain, then weigh it again. Or you can just eyeball it, mostly too much water will result in mass exploded kernals and/or standing water.

Thanks Atwar, one will attempt to try just soaking, and maybe adding a minute amount of water if it looks too dry after letting drain.

When you soak.. try using the hottest water you can get out of your tap, cover the grain completely with water and stir it up every few hours..... that should do it after a good drain and load!

What are the negative possible outcoms of using grain, in this case wbs, that has "cracked" open due to simmering the seed in water?

lysergic, as it's winter here I put my grains jars (loaded with the grain) into a stock pot of water and bring to the boil and then simmer, that way the cold glass/contents doesn't thermal shock in the PC. Lost a few jars by not having done this. However, I have found that running the jars too long in the stockpot prior the PC (which is in effect simmering) leads to exploded/cracked grain, esp. when shaken hard. The problem there is stalled or even non-existant colonisation and that's even with a mycelium/dextrose inoculation. I no longer run more than 30 minutes in the stockpot prior PC and I bring the PC slow to heat. Avoid exploded/cracked grain.

Sheister; feel free to ignore me but usually this would be said as:
Some wild bird seed is being prepared by presently soaking ~600 ml in a pillowcase in water for 12 hours. Then the pillowcase is allowed to hang until the water stops dripping.
And so forth... The impersonal passive tense used for scientific notation usually does not refer to oneself in the third person but refers passively to the implements used in the experiment... It totally doesn't matter, it just looks kinda weird
