It has been proposed that psychs made people and proto humans think differently and may have helped develop tools, brain function, possibly religion as well, so in my guess, yes!

I am not very religious myself but I do think that psliocybin mushrooms and religion have a commonality.
It is a somewhat spooky realm for me in the psychedelic mind space because I don't believe in god.
I agree with the above poster saying that they have the potential to change the mind. I don't think it happens automatically.

Check out Terence McKenna's Stoned Ape Theory and maybe his book "Food of the Gods"
There are theories that use of psychedelic plant and fungi substances influenced human evolution by invoking consciousness, language use, promoting unity in groups, and perhaps reducing the tendency to form "dominator" cultures.

To affect actual evolution by a substance, you are correct... Have to change the DNA In eggs or sperm (germ cells). Mushrooms don't do that so... Has no effect on evolution from a straight- 'chemical change to DNA' basis...
But... Evolution is tricky... Could tripping cause some specific genotype to survive and breed where others with a different genotype didnt? Possible...
And the effect in culture and cultural evolution... Probably a stronger case can be made that psychedelics have had influences in tool making, building, art, religion, astronomy, medicine, etc...
Who would dream up pyramids? And both in body Africa AND South America? Hmmmmm....
Peace

Not so fast. Maybe they change the brain for the worse. I present tie-dye shirts and 2012 predictions.

In all seriousness though. If and "if" psychedelics really sparked a mutation in our genome causing our brains to grow at an alarmingly quick time span we will never know. Unless some mad scientists formulates a process to track the history of the human genome it will all just exciting theories. But that doesn't stop us from citing mythological texts as evidence. But hell, that's here say.
