What tek are you gonna use to prepare the bulk substrate?
What kind of bulk do you plan on using?

I'd suggest coir/verm/gypsum. Its pretty contam resistant. And when you follow franks tek on how to properly pasteurize your sub then you should be golden

I have no idea. I thought following those 2 Teks would be all I needed to do. What is a bulk substrate and which Tek do you suggest I follow?

Bulk substrate is what goes into the monotub, along with the grain spawn.
Coir/verm/manure/straw are all bulk substrate materials.
You mix in the grains with this material and let it colonize, then fruit it.
Sounds like you need to do more research.

Ohhh I see. I will follow Damien5050's Coir Tek (the link in your sig).
So I have 3 Teks to follow for my Monotub. Anything else I need to read up on?

Not really, just follow the teks, and do not add anything the teks do not call for.
Do not wrap the tub in a garbage bag to colonize, that is a useless step.

Doc34's WBS tek says to "incubate" at 80 (after inoculation). What does incubate mean? Can it just sit on a shelf like PF TEK BRF jars?

If you've ever seen any movie where scientists are in a lab, growing bacteria on little dishes (petri dishes) that are contained in a mini-fridge-looking thing, then you know what an incubator is. Incubating is essentially providing the proper climate to allow your mycelium to grow productively. Cheap incubators can be made that provide a good temperature for the mycelium to grow. Not a necessary thing to have though, just allows you to speed up colonization time.

Unless you live in a very cold area, just leave your grain jars at room temp on a shelf. If you put em in an incubator, they'll probably get too hot seeing as how it's spring now and starting to get warm.

In the Doc34's WBS Tek; it says I can use pint or quart jars. Which one is best to use?
IN the Damien5050's coir Tek, it says to use 5 quarts of spawn. So should just inoculate 5 quart jars to make it easy?

yeah qt jars hold more and are standard for grain spawn use. You can also use qt jars for bulk sub pasteurization.
I have a TON of qt just for this very reason

Very nice! I however wouldn't have much use for those as I would put 1 qt spawn to 1 bag. Hell I could get away with 1/2 pint jars if I wanted, but I fit 6 - 6-7LBS spawn bags in my 75x, and Would rather only have to do 2 loads of bags for 14 qt jars instead of 6+ loads for who knows how many 1/2 pints I could fit in a freakin 75x... I dunno I'm

Since I have 2 syringes of different strains, does this mean I should make 2 separate monotubs?
If so, each syringe is 10cc, which will give me 5 QT jars each.
The mono tub design tek I am following states this: "The tubs I use are 66 quarts. 16.8”L x 24”W x 13.1”H. They give me right around 3.5-4” of substrate depth @ 7-10 quarts of spawn. (I prefer slightly higher spawn ratios due to colonization time & flush results)"
This means I am 2 QTs short of 7.
What do I do?

or.. put .25 cc to agar, then do 14 jars, then g2g to 140 jars!!! Then you'll still have 8.75 cc of spore solution

Wait.. so I just re-read Damien5050's Coir Tek. It says supplies needed: 1 Brick of Coir 2 Quarts of Verm 5 Quarts of Spawn A 5 gallon bucket with a lid
So I guess I only need to make 5 QT jars.
The monotub design tek I listed in the OP says it's made for 7-10 QTs. Is there a tek for a 5QTs of spawn monotub?

Yes, you can use anywhere from 2qts to 10qts of spawn with that tek.
The less you use, the longer it will take to colonize.

Is there a specific Wild Bird Seed to use? I cant find the exact one recommended in Doc34's tek at Lowes or Walmart. And all of the bags I find are labeled "wild bird feed" not seed... even the picture he listed in the his tek is labeled so.

CC = Cracked Corn
The amount of spore solution per jar does not have to be exact...I only use a few drops per jar/hole.
Remember, spores are potent, they can get great mileage if you treat em right.

Alright thanks guys. So no peanuts & cracked corn. Get rid of all the floaters, esp black sunflower seeds. What will remain? Everything that sinks is good... anything that floats is bad. I see so many different bags of "wild bird feed" I dont know which one to grab lol.

Cracked corn is ok if there is not a lot of it, and so it black sunflower seeds, but they can be removed.
Home depot has 40lbs of bird seed for $14.

Apprentice, you should mention that that is 5 days colonization time for oysters not cubes. Oyster mycelium is much faster and more aggressive than cube myc. And you could get 5 day colonization time for G2G on just about anything with the right amount of inoculant

Why would a quart jar colonize as fast as brf cakes in their tiny 8oz jars?
Is WBS easier to colonize than verm & brown rice?

pennington classic has done me fine. the bobo non-name brand seems to do just as well though. a little cracked corn is ok, just makes things sticky and can gunk up if over hydrated. dont bother straining sunflower seeds, they colonize fine and ive recently read they add lignin to the available nutes for your spawn

So from what I gathered; these quart jars should be fully colonized within 3 weeks? Then, I do Damien's coir tek and they should start fruiting within another 3-5 weeks? From start to finish; a mono tub will have fruits in about 2 months? Awesome.

I'd say it depends on genetics, spawn ratio, and how wet or dry the sub was prepared. I had a really slow isolate (was really potent tho) take 6 weeks to complete its spawn run, a week to show pins, and 2 weeks for the first flush to mature. That tub was maybe a little on the wet side as well. I also have a PEU tub, that finished its run today a week from when I spawned it. There is a lot of variables IMO.

I just washed and rinsed the WBS. Picked out all the black sunflower seeds and anything else that floated. Got it soaking in a pot. I will be inoculating 12 quart jars tomorrow; 6 GTs and 6 Mazapecs.
In 2 months I will have 2 full mono tubs fruiting a bunch of mushrooms That sounds fucking craaaaazy!!

Damn, so I got 12 quart jars ready to PC. But my PC only fits 7 max. Can I PC the 7 jars tonight and then the other 5 tomorrow morning? Will the hydrated WBS go bad sitting inside the jar over night?

Ok thanks Frank. One last question. In Doc34's WBS Tek, it says to cover the jar with 2 coffee filters after inoculation. And then it says to shake after all the jars are inoculated.. but in this picture of him shaking the jar, I see foil over the lids, not coffee filters.
I'm confused.

You really only need a good filter on your lid. A coffee filter over the top of a properly made lid is pretty unnecessary. If you're inoc'ing from LC or grain to grain then you want to shake after inoc. If you're inoc'ing from spores then you'll want to wait until you see growth to shake.
Here's a few of my grain jars, they stay in a plastic tub with the lid on to keep the air still around them while colonizing. No need for a coffee filter on top

So do I shake after inoculation like it says? Or wait a few days to see some mycelium and then shake?

I just inoculated 6 quart jars with Mazapec spores. I shook each one a little bit after noccin'. Wish me luck! I cant wait to see mycelium growth. It's like re-living my first grow all over again.

I have a layer of tyvek and polyfill in the center hole of the lid. I'm just following Doc34's Tek to the T. If the coffee filters are unnecessary then I can take them off.
Should I?

Damion5050's tek will work for coir/verm/gypsum.
It will not work with any other additives.
It works great for coir/verm, but it is not the best way to go.
Proper pasteurization is.

My GT jars are colonizing at a decent pace. I nocced up my Mazapec jars 1 day before I did the GTs and they have yet to show any signs of myc growth. Weird.

You gotta bang em against something like a bike tire or phonebook. Just shaking them like a rattle ain't really gonna do much. You gotta beat on them like a cheap hooker, just don't break the jar in the process.

The older the syringe the less likely it has viable spores. I have a buddy who used a four year old syringe however and got good growth.
The problem with syringes is that they are made from spore prints. Spore prints are rarely 100% clean, as fruiting is often done in open air, so in turn those contams can be transferred to the syringe. This is why things like incubating and colonizing in the dark are now frowned upon, as they give contams a chance to get ahead. In the case of the pf tek for instance, we are just trying to give the mycelium a window to get ahead.
The only way to guarantee a 100% clean inoculate, is to use a wedge of agar which allows you to see if it's clean due to the 2D growing plane.
Personally I never want to use a syringe again if I can help it. Maybe if that is my only source of genetics, I might use a syringe on agar, but that's pretty much it. Well that's my rant on syringes, I'm done for now

I'm gonna just go ahead and say it's total BS and call it a day Last I checked you don't want contaminant spores or live bacteria present in your jars anyhow, so...if you need to "outrun" a contam in a jar of grains, you're already fighting a losing battle 100% of the time.

I guess I didn't explain my thought process well (I need to stop drinking in the morning ). What I should have said is that darkness in and of itself does not help the contams get ahead, but since colonizing in light is benificial for the mycellium, not having that edge will help the contams get ahead. Thanks for keeping noobs like me honest

Heater is set to 80f on the ground.
Contam free in the '13. I know it has to do with my technique too, but hey.

As far as I have read, there is always the potential for contams in spawn due to endospores and syringes that are not clean. As far as I know we are just trying to give the mycellium a chance to get ahead because PCing is not a guaranteed complete sterilization.

You could tyndallize with your PC if you're paranoid, but I don't think it would be any better than just an hour or so at 15 psi. Just
Also, syringes can be contaminated, but that's a risk you're going to have to take into consideration when delving into the hobby. Find me one person on the website who hasn't had a bad jar at some point, even with perfect technique (which is learned). There are still errors until you hit agar. Even then, nobody's perfect
Just don't give up when you mess up a jar, just try to look at what went wrong.

Oh well... no biggie. It was a free syringe anyway. The GTs are going good, thats all I care

Endospores are a real concern but a pretty minor one. A proper soak germinates most, and the remaining endospores get damaged so badly during a PC cycle it takes far longer for them to recover than it does for even a slow culture to colonize a jar. I've left jars uninoculated (incubated and not) sitting for a couple months. I did these tests a few times. Never a bacteria contam upon opening
Dirty syringes need to be cleaned up on agar. Sometimes you get lucky and it's only got a few contam spores here or there. But if you inoculate with a syringe and get mold spores in the jar, from either the syringe or from poor technique, your jar is toast.
Point is, a lot of people on here have blamed their misfortunes on dirty syringes and endospores, but in reality the issue is actually their own sterile technique and grain prep.

Noted. I have noticed that my contam rate has dropped dramatically since I stopped using syringes and given up on incubation (with the exception of a small heater in the winter). Have only had one jar in my last 50 go south and I believe it was due to some sloppy work on my part in my SAB. Regardless I am pretty firm in my belief that a wedge is far less risky way to go compared to a syringe and that was to be my original point.
Anyway I by no means meant to spread bad information, or to derail this thread. My apologies OP.

Pet stores sell cheap coir as reptile bedding.
And yes, feel free to give those another shake. Some people advocate only one shake during colonization but I like to do at least two. Never had an issue

So I went to Walmart and had no success in finding coir or gypsum. There are no pet shops in my area so I'm out of luck.
Is there any specific brand of coir and gypsum I need to buy? I'm going to order them online.

I hear ya on the 'small town' thing. We have a slightly bigger town 24 miles away and an ever bigger town 65 miles away. Where I live, no Walmart...nothing. Kinda sucks but it's actually nice. No snooping law enforcement AND it's quiet!!!

Are they fully colonized? Is it okay for them to wait another week since I have to order coir and gypsum online?
I'm following Franks "Simple Coir/Gypsum/Verm Tek" which produces 9-12qts of hydrated substrate. Will that be enough for a 66qt mono-tub? It doesn't state so in the Tek. I just want to make sure before I order the supplies. I don't want to be short of anything when it comes time to prepare.

Yes, that's exactly the size tub I use. Really, a brick of coir and a couple quarts of verm is a good size for any average sized mono over 50qts but under 100qts IME Those look good! Dunk em when you spawn em

I just tossed the Mazapec jars. It's been almost 3 weeks and I did not see the slightest sign of mycelium life. The grains were pretty soggy and nasty looking. Oh well, good thing it was the free syringe and not one I paid for.. I'd be tearin my house down if it was LOL.
The GT jars are beautifully white as snow. Just waiting for my coir/gypsum to arrive so I can start the next process!

Oh I just stuck with GTs again lol. They worked well for my grow and the QT jars colonized fast so why not? Plus it's for my older bro's grow so I wanted to be sure he'll have success. I'll play with different strains in my new home in Nevada.

Gypsum came yesterday. Coir hasnt come yet. Even if it does come today.. I still have to wait for more QT jars to arrive (ordered yesterday). Step 2 requires more QT jars and I didnt notice that until yesterday lol.
This is what happens when you do shit last minute lol.
AAAAAND I just got done booking my ticket to move to Nevada today. I am now officially moving on the 26th of this month, which is less than 3 weeks. I probably wont even be around to see any mushrooms grow. I will be leaving the tub up to my older brother to care for.
He better take sweet care of it.

So my jars have been fully colonized for 12 days now. I notice there is some water in the jars probably due to different temperature levels. I hope they are ok. I dont see any signs of contam or early pinning (if that even happens). I'm finally starting to prepare the substrate tonight. I am currently letting the brick of coir soak in water to fully expand before I pasteurize.

So I followed Frank's coir/verm substrate prep tek. I used 1 brick of coir, 2 qts of verm, and 5 qts of water. This only gave me 10 qts of substrate, which is 10 jars. In his pictures; he ended up with 12 jars. What do I do now? Just nvm it and move on to pasteurization?
edit: nvm, I just re-read the beginning of his tek.. it said this recipe will yield 9-12 qts of hydrated substrate lol.
Moving on to pasteurization!

I just realized I need a thermometer for reading the substrate's temps. It's 1:15AM right now. I'm too lazy to go to Walmart and it's late, I need sleep lol. I'm gonna put the jars aside and continue tomorrow morning. Will they be ok in a dark cool place for 12 hours?
I hope so.. that's what I'm doing.. lol I need some sleep

So when I'm pasteurizing.. I need to keep lifting up the lid to check the temp of the substrate making sure it doesnt go over 160F, right? Unless I have a digital one with a beeper, of course.
You say to let them pasteurize for 60 OR 90 mins if I like. I start the timer when I turn the stove off when the substrate temp his 140F. I just leave them in the PC for 60 or 90 mins?

It doesn't hurt to lift the lid to check. Some folks don't even put a lid on the pot.
For my jars I let them hit 165F if they feel like it. Usually they don't. The idea is not to go over 160F for any extended amount of time during pasteurizing. But a little extra heat for 15 minutes or so hasn't caused me problems before.
I do 60 minutes 95% of the time. I haven't seen a noticeable difference in 60 or 90 minutes.

Ok, so I got it all set up and ready. Now it says to wait 1-3 weeks for colonization of the tub. How do I know when it's fully colonized? Will the whole tub be white like it was in the jars?

Also, it says to tape all 6 holes since colonization doesn't need too much FAE and that there's enough provided by the lid.
But the lid doesnt have any holes?

More likely 1-2 weeks. When the surface is completely covered in white it is ready to fruit.
No fresh air exchange is given during colonizing. GE (gas exchange) is provided by the imperfect lid. It doesn't seal perfectly, and that is how it should be.

I think my holes are too small. They are only 1 inch in diameter.

The last time I get to see my monotub in person. I hopped on the plane a few hours ago and am now in Denver transferring flights. I will be in Las Vegas in a few hours. I'm staying with my cuzzin for a few weeks until I find my own place. Cheers to the next chapter of my crazy life. I gotta start on a brand new monotub all over again lol.

Toss the tub after the harvest.
Until then, use a salt paste to cover any exposed green spots.

Damn bad news. I told them to harvest all the fruits last night n toss the container. They waited til this morning n the contam spreader to all the mushrooms. They're tossing everything.
Grow = unsuccessful
I'm sure it was because they kept that room between 83-90 degrees. What a waste. That would've been a nice 15+ gram harvest.

Looks like the mushies also needed a lot more fresh air exchange.

Oh my god.. all 15 jars got bacteria in there somehow. 2 weeks and they barely got any mycelium growth. At the bottom it was wet n soggy n had some black shit. No green or blue so it wasnt mold. I tossed them all out and am now waiting for new syringes to arrive. I reaaaaally want to introduce my big cuzzin to shrooms. He's so excited but our attempt failed. Now we gotta wait another 2 months for some mushies.
Does anyone live in LV?!?!

Agar man. That's the way to ensure a clean inoculate. Then you clone and take prints and never need to buy that variety again. Good luck on your next try.
