Mars is comeing
    #1807090 - 08/12/03 09:14 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Maybe no Neburu (planet X) but could it be close enough to effect the earth and cause a war.

Be sure to mark your calendar and remember to watch!!

MARK AUGUST 27, 2003 ON YOUR CALENDAR!

MARS WILL APPEAR AS BIG AS THE MOON!

FIRST TIME IN AT LEAST 5,000 YEARS!

Never again in your lifetime will the Red Planet (Mars) be so
spectacular!

This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that
will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in
recorded
history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the
way
Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can
only
be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000
years but it may be as long as 60,000 years.

On August 27, Mars will come within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next
to
the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain
a magnitudeof -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest
75-power
magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked
eye.
Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August, Mars will rise
in
the east at 10 pm and reach its azimuth at about 3 am. But by the end
of
August when these two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall
and
reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 am. That's pretty
convenient
when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded
history.

So don't miss it. Mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see
Mars
grow progressively brighter throughout the month.

Share this with your friends, children and grandchildren. No one alive
today will ever see this again!!!

i'm still excited!

Funny, I was just outside 10 minutes ago and I realized, "Wow, mars is really clear and visible tonight"

Pretty awesome!

blows my mind

And it's pretty obvious why, when considering that Mars and Earth are closest when Earth is located right between Mars and the Sun, so Mars will then be exactly on the opposite side of the sky from the Sun.

So, is Mars still going to appear like a bright light, or will we actually sort of be able to see it without the telescope?
Peace.

It will appear as a bright reddish light, just below the resolution of the human eye. The apparent width will be about 1/75 of the full moon's 0.5 degrees. This is 0.4 arc minutes, and the maximum resolution of the human eye is limited to about 1 arc minute.

Binoculars should show it as a small disk, but probably no surface details.

Last Saturday we had an astronomic show off with some pros and amateurs astronomers and i managed to see Mars in a good scope. It was an orange/red circle like the size of the moon viewed in naked eye, AMAZING !!! It was told to me, that it wouldn't grow much more in size.
The 27 of August is also a strange day for astrology, not just the Mars issue. That day, Venus and Jupiter will be right on the other side of sun, aligned with earth and Mars but there's also the alignment with the Regulus star, the emerging Horus.

Uh oh, August 27th, 2003, the end of the WORLD! I predict, I predict! Prepare to have all of the energy from the alignment rushing through you... haha
Peace.

I have a question about this 75 power magnification thing...

What the hell does that mean??

Will a normal pair of binoculars be good enough to make mars appear as big as the moon? My binoculars say 7 x 35 mm, 525 ft at 1000 yds (175m/1000m), but I have no clue what that means.

Anyone here know?

Namaste.

those are 7 power binoculars so you won't see much with it except a fat red starlike object. and the 35mm refers to the diameter of the lenses.

I took a look at Mars the other night through my telescope at 133X. right now its about 24 arcseconds across. it'll get just a little bigger later this month. through the scope I could see the southern polar cap and some dark surface markings which I think was Syrtis Major.
A few weeks ago when Mars was about 22 arcsecs, I saw it through my friend's telescope at over 500X and it was an incredible sight, it was HUGE with a lot of surface detail visible. you need some serious equipment and VERY clear and steady skies to use that kind of magnification though.

FYI, Mars is in the constellation Aquarius right now. look south after midnight, you can't miss it.
