Run-in with a cop (?)
    #18070856 - 04/07/13 07:46 AM (11 years, 1 month ago)

Connecticut cops are dicks.

I'm driving home on a long stretch of highway which is about 45-50 minutes of my hour commute every day.

There's some asshole going 40mph, chatting on a cell phone, and swerving all over the road.

I pass the guy in the proper turn lane and keep going on my merry way. It's a long ride so I usually just chill, do the speed limit, watch out for kids and people getting their mail after work.

I'm just relaxing and this guy starts tailgating me. I speed up a little. He gets right on my ass and then come the red and blue.

My first thought is "fuck me I've got a shitload of weed in my bag" but the guy comes up and he's not even wearing a uniform or visible badge.

He asks me to identify myself - not for license or registration or insurance or anything. I told him I'd identify myself if he could tell me which county or city he works for, what his badge number is, or what his name is. He keeps refusing this and tells me it's illegal for me not to identify myself.

I tell him for all I know he's someone with lights from radio shack. I ask for about the eighth time for him to identify himself, badge number or name or otherwise. He tells me I have no right to do that.

He starts threatening me by saying he's going to pull in the narcotic dogs and search my vehicle. I called his bluff and said only a shitty off-duty cop with no jurisdiction would threaten me like that. I ask him again for his badge number and to identify himself.

He tells me I was speeding and asks me why. I said I passed some asshole on a cellphone going 40 and swerving all over the road. I look in my rearview and say, "Oops I guess that was you."

He asks for my name, I tell him to identify himself, he says that's illegal so I give him a fake one and a fake town.

Off-duty assholes. Power tripping even off the clock.

Don't get intimidated by these clowns, kids, but on the other side of the coin don't act like a dick to cops who actually have jurisdiction.

And yes I'm posting this partially for bragging rights but the moral of the story is keep your head and know what to do.

I easily could've lost my shit and gotten myself arrested. Keep a clear head.

Hey cool that's great I really don't give a shit.

I could've easily panicked and started giving off signs something was wrong or that I was worried and/or intimidated.

Why would someone even bother posting something fake like that? Pointless.

You could have maybe ended up dead in a ditch, too. The second this guy wasn't willing to identify himself, I would have driven away. That's if I'd stopped at all. Of course, if it was night and I didn't see the car, maybe I would have.

I will point out right now that it could be risky to not stop for flashing lights. However, there have been enough cases of people impersonating plainclothes cops, that most reasonable cops who don't want to personally screw you over really badly or some reason, will likely understand. It probably helps if you have a vagina. (Who says sexism and the double standard aren't alive and well? Or things used against men, for that matter....)

Trying to remember where I read this story, not long ago, of a female who had a plain car pull up behind her with flashers on. She almost stopped, but for some reason took out her phone, and called the local police, telling her of the situation. The dispatcher told her that there was no such plain car in her area, and not to stop for the car. If I remember correctly the guy WAS impersonating a cop, and I think had a criminal record or some crap as well.

I've heard of a few more stories like that.

Again-- if a cop wouldn't identify himself in plainclothes, I would likely not stick around to find out why. The safe bet there is to drive toward a very crowded public place, if you're not by one already.

Of course, if he's the kind of cop who's egotistical enough to not show you a badge when it's YOUR safety on the line (go ahead and put a COP's safety at risk, and see how fast they're ready to stomp your ass down-- perhaps literally) I wouldn't really want to piss them off any more. However, cops are REQUIRED to identify themselves. If he won't give you ANY kind of ID, he's not following the rules, anyway.

Now I wish I got his tags and could check with the county.

But A+ post and very pertinent.

When I was in my 20s there were drug dealers ripping off competition by posing as cops until a real officer got shot and that got shut down real quick.

Once upon a time I was a dumb kid living in the city. I took the bus a lot. At the bus terminal there were always drugs floating around. Usually I passed / ignored it. This one day a random big black dude comes up to me and tells me he has hash for sale. I hadn't seen hash in ages, so I asked how much, and I soon found myself handing him $10-$20 to try it out.

Dude hands me a little lump of hash and sort of walks away.

Less than a minute later another big black dude comes up to me, and says:

"Excuse me, sir. Did you just purchase some narcotics today?"

"WTF?"

"Put your hands behind your back, you're under arrest..."

I nearly shit myself.

A second later I notice a weird look on dude's face... I actually started turning around (y'know... with my hands behind my back. lol)-- and I saw his buddy with the hash behind me, laughing his ass off. I had a good laugh, after squeezing the turd as far back into my sphincter as it would go.

Real funny, bus station hash guy. Real funny.

I'm starting to wonder if this guy's a cop or fucked in the head.

The past two days he's been coming out of the same side road and tailgating me.

Yesterday he was on my ass and kept pretending to pass me. I threw hazards on to let him pass and he just dropped back. When he'd get almost to my left side he'd turn almost into me. This continued for at least 20 minutes.

So during this shit yesterday, two marked cop cars pulled a guy over for speeding.

So what now? Get his tags and call the county to see if it's really a cop?

I don't even know what to say. This is dangerous road hazard behavior and childish.

I'm worried if he is truly a cop then I'm gonna get my shitbox drysmashed since we all know how "anonymous formal complaints" typically end up.

What would you guys do?

Thanks much. This is now pissing me the fuck off.

Same guy, tailgating / harassing you?

For fucking SURE you need to be on the phone and finding out if this guy is a legitimate cop. You don't have to call to make a formal complaint (if that idea makes you nervous-- though at this point you have the right, as far as I'm concerned, as he is harassing you, if I'm reading this right).

Just frame the scenario / question as if you just want to know for reasons of your safety-- this guy stopped you, claimed he was a cop, would not identify himself AT ALL-- no badge, no name, not even a department / jurisdiction, and now he's been following you daily, and you while that behavior may seem a little odd for a cop, especially since you've done nothing wrong, but you're not sure a cop would even behave in such an extreme, seemingly irresponsible manner and you are afraid for your safety, and just want confirmation whether or not this guy is a cop....  something like that....

Make sure you have a good description of the guy, if you decide to do it.

If you make the call and it turns out the guy IS a cop, and the harassment then gets worse-- perhaps you could try contacting Internal Affairs for the police department, or otherwise the FBI.

I'm on my way home right now and have had cruise ctrl on at 55 on point. He's been behind me for 20 minutes and is doing it again. I stopped with hazards on and he also pulled to the side of the road and stopped.

I tried taking a roundabout turn but he "cut me off at the pass" with a shortcut.

He almost succeeded in bumping me off the road in a very sharp turn. I went over the fog line and almost down a culvert.

If the guy refuses to identify himself and I beat his ass, I'd likely get very fucked in the event he turns out to be one right? They'll believe him over me and will likely say he identified himself multiple times and I'm in the pokey?

This guy deserves a brick to the head. This shit is not fucking funny anymore.

So next time, call the local cops and report him. If they do nothing, you can reasonably assume it's one of them. Next, call the state cops.

Next, get your lawyer to look into it.

I agree with LDS. If what you say is true, you need to get on the phone with the cops-- because this guy is going too far.

The only way what he is doing could be acceptable in any way (following you, etc) is if you're a legit suspect in an ongoing crime. For example, if you're a dealer and this guy is on the narcotics squad. But usually in such a case, I would think they're a little better at not being seen.

Running you off the road? That's some psycho shit. I'd have been on the phone to the cops days ago. One of my close relatives was murdered by an unhinged cop. Shit's no joke. There are some psychos with badges out there. And at this point you don't even know if that's the case here. He could just be a psycho without a badge. I'm not sure which would be more dangerous.

What I do know, is that allowing this to go on does not seem like the safest move.

Good luck.
