Hi guys and girls,
Bit early possibly, but went for a reconnaisance mission today to see how things are in my region. Very dry, looks no Psilocybe subaeruginosa here for at least a little while yet i reckon.
But, a little surprise, a found an early P. semilanceata.
Found at the the same site as last three years, at the back of a cattle farm in Southern Tasmania - Huon Valley, south facing paddock, in top shady corner. about 400 - 450 ft above sea level altitude, maybe a little dew, but im thinking only enough. shortish grass this time around as the cattle have been in the paddock, but still lots of moss. a few other little mushrooms around, a couple of Panaeolus sp.
keeping an eye on cow pats for P. alutacea, but i have my doubts, just wishful thinking
Hopefully over the next few weeks as it gets colder and wetter, i'll be able to photograph some better examples of local fungi.
Hidden in the grass, not the best photos i know:

full specimen:

Gills:

Base of the stem:

amazing how quick they start drying out, here after a couple of hours, but you can see the bluing at the base of the stem:

Cap was already dried out a bit and yellowed and had lost the hygrophanous layer, but can still see the distinct pixie cap nipple.
Not sure how the autumn winter season will pan out here where i am, missing nome of the usual fungi that appear this time of year. The Agaricus sp. have been going crazy after some good rains, but not enough to get the forest fungi happening.
Curious to see how it pans out for others. heres to a good season
Cheers, Obtuse.

It looks very similar to Psilocybe semilanceata or P mexicana but I'm not sure if those ever grow in Tasmania. Inski would know I'm sure. You should try to save a few so someone can look at them under a microscope.
Never mind, I'm really high. I hope you have an awesome season!

Yes, these are definitely Psilocybe semilanceata, and are known to occur in Tasmania as per Guzman's "Genus Psilocybe". I have had previous examples froim this same location positively identified by another mycologist, and deposited some at the local herbarium.

First miserable wet dark day of the season down in Hobart today. Might get some early risers tomorrow you never know. I managed to get my years supply worth last year (about a hundred), drying/storage method lasted the whole year, still got a few left. Might try to find some of the Semelin... semelean, the semmy ones, this year.
I'm actually looking more forward to getting loads of Amanita's this year, though I'm still not sure of the legality of picking those come to think of it.

I saw my first lot of Amanitas this morning along the edge of the highway in Kingston. Remember that in Russia they pick these rinse the "poison" out and store them to eat when times are tough. But the laws in Aus can be tricky. In Tasmania, muscimol is listed in the Misuse of Drugs Act 2001, but i cannot find Amanita listed anywhere in the legislature.
If your thinking subs, its still way to warm of a night for any fruiting activity of P. subaeruginosa, remember they fruit from cold not changes in moisture.
But a good change in weather will kick things along a bit, but i dont think yesterday was quite enough.
Cheers, Ob.

Yeah I gotta go and get enough Amanita's for the year ahead. Love those things almost as much as Subbies to be honest. I favour the saute and freeze and eat two tablespoons method, never got high on them.
