how can I tell if a casing is too wet?
    #1806895 - 08/12/03 08:20 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I've heard that casings being too wet leads to contams, but also that I shouldn't touch the casing with my hands... so how can I tell if it's too wet?

Before you put the casing layer on, you shouldhave not been able to squueeze any water out of it. Its always better to be too dry than too wet, because you can simply mist and fix the problem.

The 60/40 tek I read said I should be able to squeeze a little water out of a handful of the stuff, so I made it that way. I'm more concerned that I might over-mist it later on.

60/40 is what I used when I cased also. It is way easier than other casing materials, to tell when its getting dry. The coir changes from brown/black to an orangish red. Just let it chill, and whn you see the change, mist as nessassary.

Thanks, going by color I'll err on the side of caution if anything.

One of the reasons I don't reccomend all verm casings: hard to tell moisture content. Use a proper 50/50 or 60/40. Just make sure that the casing surface doesn't look matted down, wet and soppy by excess moisture. I usually don't have to mist casings till at least after the first flush.

You?re a lucky man, my casings need to be misted at least twice a day if I don?t want them to feel crispy (I live in Spain 45-48?C in the shadow!!!, have been for almost 3 weeks).
Anyway, I did check how dry was my casings by taking a sample with my hands (no contams) just wash them well with soap and then with alcohol 96?.
