Neato free software firewall

I was looking for the old, free, (not gay and bloaty) Tiny Firewall and apparently this is pretty much the same thing, you can select ports to always allow/deny and pretty much anything you would expect to find in a decent software firewall, for those without the money/knowledge for a hardware solution. It's fairly easy to use (to me at least).
To counter that new annoying worm, do what Symantec and MS are saying, and block ports 69/135/139/445/4444, and whatever else they may have added by now.
Yes I suppose software firewalls can be exploited but I am not sure how many people go around trying to get into every single firewall when there are perfectly unsecured machines out there, unless you really pissed someone off.
Tech support is provided to you by the RTFM button, not me.

yah kerio rocks.. I like how it shows what process is listening to each port, and who exactly you're connected too. not to nitpick you or anything, but the best way to counter the new worm is by prevention; you should have applied the patch when it was released (july 16th).. and yes, it's been on windowsupdate AND the built-in Automatic Updates feature found in windows 2000/xp since day one.

I wasn't quite sure if I got it before today but Kerio definitely didn't let anything in, perfect for forgetful and lazy types like me

This senctence got me thinking. What if Microsoft was part of the developers of the worm's/virus's that have been flooding the net so far. Think of it, They release the viruses so you have to get the patch in order to protect your computer. But what the patch actually does is send typical consumer statistic information back to Bill so he can predict purchasing trend's and manipulate the stock market to his will. Great way to back the law suits he is up against.
This is just my paranoid 2 cent's

I think Microsoft is very much like the major auto manufacturers in that they purposely and discreetly release inferior products so that upgrades and repeat-clientele are guaranteed. Contemporary cars are really not designed to last, although it is possible. Similar to Microsoft who perhaps overlooks various security flaws so that OS upgrades and additional software to correct such flaws becomes that much more marketable.
Just speculation, of course. No evidence to back up my claims.

effective, cheap (or free) firewall = old network capable system running linux, acting as a router on your network, and filtering packets using iptables. also, just using a hardware router, if you're on cable or dsl, can greatly increase your security. even if you only have one computer, it is worthwhile to own a router, and use it, if you're part of a large wide area network. many routers have built in, though handicapped, packet filtering. i know a router isn't free, but if you're really that worried about how secure you are while you check your hotmail account and so forth...

I converted to Red Hat 2 months ago and I will never go back to window's. I have run linux before but I just got fed up with windows alway's rebooting, crashing, and the same old GUI since window's 3.1. Not only that, 80% of north America uses windows, so most viruses are produced for windows, 15% written for unix/linux, and 5% for other OS's(according to ComputerWorld Monthly Vol 18 number 13)#Red hat 9 is quite easy to figure out for those who don't understand programming or shell environments. I encourage anybody willing to format their drive to check it out.

cool.. i've been using linux for almost 5 years now. redhat 9 is the distro currently running on my system as well.
linux is a system i am quite fond of. it does everything i want it to do, but only if i make it. it's quite stable in my experience, and much of the software that runs under linux/unix is also quite stable.
linux is a superior operating system indeed.

I am really considering linux. I need to use studio mx and other windows-based programs daily. What do you do for such software needs? Is it easy to switch back and forth between windows programs and linux?
Thanks

I'm not exactly sure what StudioMX is, but if there is no working replacement for Nerdix, see http://www.winehq.com/ .. Wine is a bit unfinished still, so I don't really know.

linux has software available for it which supports M$ remote desktop. if you're on a lan then you can share your windows desktop and use it from linux. there is wine, a windows "emulation" environment and also vmware. vmware is commercial software, costs around $90 for a license, but would allow windows software to run under linux in about 99% it's native environment.
not to mention, you can find linux counterparts of most popular windows software.

What do you guys think about Zone Alarm? Or will I be better of with Kerio? I'm pretty new to firewalls. Thanks
