Turbidity of Jet dry (water is cloudy when microwaved).
    #1806016 - 08/12/03 04:20 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

So I have this jar that I made with water in the bottom, a tyvek filter and a plastic lid. It's a syringe machine... I put some water and jet dry in it, seal it them put it in the microwave and the jet dry water gets really cloudly... is that bad? It doesn't clear up when the temperature cools down either like one would think it would. What is happening to the jet dry>?

No you put 1/4tsp per pint (that's what it said) to make the syringe a suspension... more homogenous.

if i understand correctly...jet dry breaks the surface tension of the water so spores wont clump up and stick to the sides of the syringe...

Yeah, it's a surfectant -- it does what you said.   Does anyone know what the active ingredient in Jet Dry is, btw?

It actually doesn't tell you what the active ingredient is. Apparently you only need a few drops and I put in more like 30 drops.... woops.

Another thing to try instead of Jet dry would be Kodak Photoflo. B&W photographers use it as a surfactant to help film dry evenly without water spots. Much like Jet dry, it only takes a few drops.

Active ingredients in photoflo are:
propylene glycol
p-Tertiary-octylphenoxy polyethyl alcohol (aka Triton X-100)

Both ingredients are relatively benign.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to give it a go with my next set of syringes.
