Side and bottom pins?! No worries! SHP style B-)
    #18059736 - 04/04/13 08:12 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

So EVERYONE hates to harvest bottom and side pins! I don't blame you, it's a total PITA! However I figured instead of constantly telling everyone it's not as hard as they think, and trying to explain my process 5 times a day... I found my pics and am making it a tek!

Star out by harvesting ALL your top fruits:

Then take a second tub (I use a spare mono), clean it off, and set it on top of the substrate inside the tub:

Once you're here, just flip it over:

And HARVEST!!

Now to dunk your mono, all you need to do is the opposite, and bring your tub back to the first picture. You can do this in a bathtub for ease of cleanup :yesnod: Just let cold water run though the top tub, and it'll stream into the bottom, fill up, and flow out the holes down the drain. Keep the water as cold as possible IMO. I let the water flow for a bit as it washes all the crap outta the tub and off the substrate. It also keeps the substrate submerged in water without having to add weights as the water in the top tub holds it down :hamsterdance:

I hope this helps ya'll!

Is there any special picking requirement?  I just tug loose what will come loose and go from there.  That ok?

You want to cut at the base if you feel it will tear up the substrate.

Some pluck right off, some are "rooted" in pretty good, those I would cut at the base, close to the substrate.

If you're harvesting top fruits yes, but side pins and bottom pins shown in the pics need to be lifted gently off the substrate. I rinse my hand in alcohol or wear gloves for harvesting these (normally just the iso, I hate gloves)

Make sure you're careful, you can pull chucks of sub if you're not

So.. when you cut them Ive come to notice there is stilla bit of fruit left on the cake.. and when dunked they turned black and gave off a strange sweet smell - Im betting bacterial contam on the fruits because once I got rid of those and diligently fanned, the sweet smell vanished.

Any ideas here Capn SHP?

Are you sure that's not just bruising?

The stumps are usually 100% mycellium, they will not rot.

Pics?

Heres the pics i submitted earlier. Those fruits look exactly like everything else. The smell is gone and the mycelium is healthy. Dunno why it smelled sweet and turned black.

stumps will turn black and rot usually not a problem as they will sit and rot self-contained style.

That is very good, however when Kramer encounters this he says that putting the sub in a container where it can fruit out is great after a flip like this because several of the fruits will take off and grow to a gigantic proportion.  You can even dunk the casing before the flip and then let it do justice.

Gently rubbing the fruiting sides of the sub will cause all of the fruits to fall off with little damage to the sub, after drying, you can shake out your goods by removing several times to progressive trays and leaving all the dried shake(verm/sub/casing/shit) behind.

possibly, if they looked like giant pins, then yes, if they looked like struggling mushrooms that have open caps then not so much.

I did not look at your links, but yes, sometimes stumps will rot, it does happen they turn black and slimy, and usually if left alone will not affect the casing, it happens, trust me.

Dont listen to me if you don't like, I speak from fruiting literally thousands upon thousands of mushrooms.

No disrespect to you my friend, I just have no time to entertain an avenue of thought that I know to be wrong.

They will occasionally rot and usually to no consequence.  And I am talking hand twisted that breaks and cut with a sharp knife. This is fact.

I get that, which is why I meant absolutely no disrespect, but so does this guy.

Leaving a 'stump' doesn't cause rot or contamination.  That's an old myth that won't die because noobs keep repeating it to other noobs.  In our farm, we cut every mushroom off with a sharp knife whether it's part of a cluster or not.  We never remove the stumps.  I have substrate blocks from last year that are outdoors and still fruiting, with all the stumps from 2009. There's no rot or mold.  They even survived all last winter under the snow, thawing out and fruiting again this year, old stumps and all.

And everyone else I linked to does as well.

This is why I am so skeptical.

I guess it's just one of those things nobody agrees on.
