are you birthing the cakes for the first time???
what i usually do is shake teh cake loose from the walls of the jar. then open the lid (scrape off verm layer if you use one) and fill it with water right to the brim. then cold shock the jars in the fridge for 12 hours then birth into terrarium.
leave the jar sealed 100% with tape over innoculation holes if you plan to cold shock in the fridge like i do. lotsa molds and crap in the fridge :/

you want the cake totaly under water so yeah have the top on and if you put the jars(dunk) in the fridge for 24-48 hour that will dunk/cold shock your cake all at the same time and you should see pins in a few days.
never go past 48 hours when dunking your cake becuase you can kill the mycelium

48 hours? Seems to long to me, i like to dunk 12 hours normally, 24 hours when they look really dry.
But I may have to try 48 if it works better.

48 is not 'better', he said 'never go past 48' because the cake will start dying. a 6 hr dunk is about the minimum, with 24 hours being standard for dry cakes.

aah hippie!!! i remember when you were just writing your 'neglect tek' and im thinking of trying it soon myself.
i personally only dunk when i first birth cakes. when theyre in the fruiting chamber i use the 'half a straw stuck in teh cake' tek and keep that filled with water. i forgot what its called after all this time but it works great.
but cakes are for wusses GO CASE SOMETHING lol... j/k

when i dunk my cakes i remove them from the jars and stack them up in a clean 6 gallon paint bucket from home depot then i fill the bucket up with water until the cakes are floating up out of the bucket then i push them under the water and put the lid on the bucket for 24 hours. it works great. never dunk a contaminated cake though or you'll fuck em all up. oh just for your reference 60 cakes roughly will fit into a 6 gallon bucket. depends on how big or small the cakes are.
