Arnold.
    #1805594 - 08/12/03 02:45 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

What qualifications does he have to be governor?
We know he can lift weights really well, and he can kind of act.

He doesn't even really have a platform. He's #1 in the polls, though.

I think it's pretty safe to say that anyone with any interest in politics would immediately dismiss him as a fringe candidate with no real qualifications or experience.

So why do people want to vote for him? I really can't imagine someone being so stupid that they would vote for someone just because he is famous, but obviously a lot of people are doing just that.

I forget who said this, but here's a quote to answer your question:

EDIT: By the way, it's spelled "Ahnold."

As was pointed out in an earlier post on just this subject, perhaps him NOT being a politician is actually a very good thing.

The vast majority of voters base their vote on charisma, not issues. I've seen Arnold at a few press conferences now, and he has a very confident, polished look. That's all 90% of the voters need.

Well, perhaps, but there's a whole lot of people who aren't politicians, and I'm sure that the vast majority aren't qualified to run anything. The only difference between Arnold and the rest of the morons is the fact that he's rich and famous.

he's rich and famous.. but he also has an amazing story as an immigrant. I'm sure a lot of people in California will be able to relate to him more due to the high number of immigrants there.

Good point. He was rich before he became a big actor. Made a crapload of money of real estate investments in Cali.

wahhh, get over it. Back on topic my man.

Anywho, the only qualifications to run for governor are those that are set by the state and federal level. Being a good businessman or politician is all fine and dandy but what has that got us in the past? Besides ANYTHING and ANYONE is better than Gray Davis. Hell, Alex could do a better job and he's a limey.

It seems to me that leadership and capability mean very little in a campagn.  In a system where people vote the 'candidate' becomes the product and advertising commences with little regard to how they will do the job, and genuine problems that need to be dealt with.  Problem is when people vote like this, they invalidate the entire system, and you end up having stupid fucks in office that were 'popular' at the time, but then even the people forget all about it once the advertising ends.

Arnold Schwartzenegger has a degree in International Business.
He is no stranger to politics. He has spearheaded a successful policy in California for after school programs. He was head of the committee for physical fitness under Bush I. He has often espoused his republicanism. I remember one Republican National Comitee convention when he got on the microphone and proclaimed all the democrats "a bunch of girly men."

I think he is the only Republican candidate who has a chance in hell of winning California.

That being said, a republican governor of California is certainly counterproductive to *my* agenda...
