the colberT reporT

anyone watch it/like it? i find him to be extremely hilarious sometimes, but he also has logic other times. watching him argue certain topics is sorta embarrassing. but he's still really funny
anyone prefer the daily show? i think it's 10% less funny but generally a little more open-minded than the reporT
i'm just tuned into comedy central right now so i figured i'd make a thread. south park is on now... my favorite comedy show

My father is so conservative republican that he agrees with everything Stephen says. He also doesn't know that Stephen is a satirist and thinks the show is just a news show with priority issues.

stephen colbert is a character played by stephen colbert. he isn't actuially always expressing his own opnions. thats what the entertainment buissness does.
it's like when the actor neil parick harris played a character called neil patrick harris in herald and kumar, he isnt really like that.

Colbert is a satirist. Once you understand that, it will change your entire viewpoint of the show.

Daily Show and Colbert are alright, I'd say I definately liked their earlier seasons more. The cool reporters from Daily Show moved on and their new ones aren't as good as I remember, Colbert is funny but he gets a bit boring I suppose. They are good shows though, I like them.

Wow, that's sad. I kind of don't believe that... at all. It's painfully obvious that he is a slapstick comedian that plays the part of an absolutely ignorant half-retarded conservative. A comedic conservative shill. He leans to the left just as much as douche dick Stewart.

I haven't watched either in a while, but I think Colbert is much funnier. Jon Stewart's schtick gets tiresome. Both have some interesting interviews though, I'd rather watch either than actual cable news.

Without a doubt Colbert is funnier. I lean closer to the right and I really don't like the innuendos or how he acts like an ignorant republican shill. But I have to admit Colbert will crack me up sometimes.

I understand that he's joking most of the time when he's just talking directly to the audience. I was referring more to how he argues with his special guests at the end of the show. Sometimes he doesn't let them get a word in and shoots down their statements with "but God is right, making you wrong."
I know he's joking most of the show, that's the point lol. And even with his guests he can joke around and be funny. But when he tries to argue back with them (not necessary for him to be funny) it just makes him look kinda dumb. Excuse me if I'm missing something here.
Regardless I still find him very amusing.

I guess that's sorta true. I just feel bad for his guests sometimes because they have to promote against his act of "I won't even let you get a word in because I know I'm right!" His arguments aren't hard to refute logic wise, but he'd be annoying to argue with just because he sometimes doesn't even let them speak. It almost seems a little distasteful sometimes. It's the reason why I love his humor when he doesn't have guests yet because it's just him making fun of the news or whatever.... there's no arguing over someone else because he has the louder voice, so to speak.
Maybe I'm just putting myself in his guests shoes though because I absolutely hate arguing with people that defend themselves in that way. If they know what they're getting into before the show, then more power to them

It's satire, and it's hilarious. You really can't take him seriously, even when he interviews his guests. He is simply playing a character (and doing a damn good job imo). I'm sure he plays a big part in writing the show, but he has other writers as well.

yeah, i get ya. but seriously, him being a comedian, it's worth more to him to get the guest to "one-up" him somehow. the show isn't really about theology, but yet he has so many various different types of guests with various different professions, which gets all of those areas some attention in broadcast.

I don't think you get the satire. The point is that he plays an asshole who thinks everything is about him and who interrupts his guests to show that he's always right. However, if you pay attention everything he's saying is sarcastic and usually he's showing how his guests are actually correct and that the pundits who act like his character are jerks. It's genius, really, and anyone who goes on his show should be fully aware of his schtick.

Etc etc. ok guys I hear you haha. I was probably just taking some of his satire to personally like "man, he'd be kinda annoying to talk to if I wanted to promote myself or my ideas" but that makes sense. He still ultimately promotes his guests either way, even if he says stupid shit and kinda cuts them off, he still says "go buy their awesome new book ____" at the end of the interview so it all works out.
Ok I can drop that part of things now. Now this is just a How Hilarious Do You Find Colbert? thread.

Colbert is funny because he's developed a good character. The outrageous things he says are funny.
Stewart is just a political talk show host. he's being himself. when he says something outrageous he's just being a dumbass. I change the channel.

No, he definitely mocks conservative pundits. He espouses a very liberal view with his satire of such conservatives.

anyone prefer the daily show? i think it's 10% less funny but generally a little more open-minded than the reporT
i'm just tuned into comedy central right now so i figured i'd make a thread. south park is on now... my favorite comedy show
When I was a teenager in the early Bush years the Daily Show helped me understand how full of shit the whole political pageant really is. Before I started watching the Daily Show I took the statements of politicians at face value. I mean I knew they were full of shit but I figured they generally had some modicum of integrity. Jon helped me see the light. Funny as hell, too. They crack me up with stuff that would piss me off in any other context.
I went a couple years almost never watching Stewart or Colbert, because I'd stopped watching TV. More recently my roomie and I have made it a daily ritual to download and watch the newest episodes (before they even broadcast on our side of the country).
My favor swings back and forth between Stewart and Colbert, they both have their own strengths. Stewart is morally forthright, honest and engages directly with his audience and guests, but Colbert is a consummate showman. When Colbert first started up I thought for sure he'd run out of steam and get sick of the character in a year or two, but he's only grown into the role; he's crazier and more energetic than ever. Damn good stuff all around.

They definitely lean left and make no effort to hide it. I seem to remember hearing Colbert is a registered Democrat. Even so, they've both been known to get pretty brutal with Democrats as well. Stewart in particular is madly in love with libertarian heroes and ideals; He's had Ron Paul on his show a ton of times, and in the primaries last year he took the media to task for ignoring Ron Paul's popularity and shutting him out of coverage. Andrew Napolitano is another libertarian "friend of the show". IMO they leave their own politics at the door when they get on stage and walk a pretty admirably centrist line. Pundits on both sides of the aisle have tried to discredit them and have generally made complete asses of themselves grasping at straws. The ultimate punchline always is when you realize these Very Serious people are taking stand-up comedians Very Seriously. Stewart announcing the death of CNN's Crossfire as a guest-- "The show before us is puppets making prank phone calls!" That was incredible.
And oh God, Colbert at the White House press dinner...
You young folks gotta understand, we took Crossfire and Bill O'Reilly and their ilk really seriously before they were made a national laughingstock by Stewart and Colbert. People would recite the opinions of partisan hacks as if they mattered.

It's a satire. I would gladly put him as president over the clowns we have now. He's very wise and very smart.

He satires the republican side. That's what makes it funny. Yet good news.

I watch them both on a regular basis, Colbert is much more entertaining. He's trying to be funny and shits all over everything in the process, Stewart has an agenda and giving his opinion comes first and being funny comes second, his show has gotten more and more preachy and less and less funny over the years. Its also lost a lot of its good writers/actors, but when Colbert and Carell were on it together it was the best it ever was. Also when back in black with Lewis Black was once a week.

I like when colbert interviews people, like the author of "where the wild things are"
but his show gets old after a while. don't really watch comedy central much anymore.

yeah in real life he's just gay.
gay as fuck.

Honestly my least favorite part of Colbert is the interviews. He doesn't interview anybody. He verbally assaults them for our entertainment. Never seen him interview anybody honestly LOL

eh i mean compared to the rest of the episode?
he's just making fun of whatever is happing in world news.
to be honest, if it was more if his own personal views it'd be one thing.
but like you said.. he does it for entertainment.
i beleive stewart actually goes hard when it comes to politics though.

Was talking specifically about his interviews. He doesn't let the other people get a word in. And yes Stewart does but so does Colbert. He's also got his super PAC as well he has pull in politics and is very bright. I'd vote for Colbert

I don't watch them anymore. they're both full of shit, they act like they debunk mass media bullshit but they just replace it with their own blends of pointless mass humor bullshit. neither has the nerve to say what needs to be said, but if they did they wouldn't be on television.

i don't know about that, i think television is pretty lenient these days.
With all of the indie, and counterculture telvision shows and what not.
what needs to be said is just an opinion when it comes down to it, and who wants biased news?
i watch abc 13 or goodmorning america if i need to know whats going on in the world.
not some comedians joke around about gay mairage and pot laws.

Colbert and Stewart are totally different shows and totally different points of view. Colbert sometimes makes a point with his logic being so stupid you believe the opposite, but usually its just him shitting all over everything. Also he's always trying to be funny, and he usually is.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the interviewer himself. That guy is a shithead. He has no business doing interviews. He asks a bunch of really masturbatory, obtuse questions and every time he asks one stupid enough to give Colbert an absence seizure he seems to think it's because he's just too fucking smart. There are moments in the interview where he's so insistent that his sloppy interviewing is actually a "style" that minutes drag on trying to get Colbert to answer a question a normal person would have been able to ask within seconds. He only gets away with it because he's loaded. Also he's ugly. Fuck him.

Colbert delivered one of his best lines ever last night. So good, business insider covered it.
Quote:
Colbert played clips of Scarborough and "Morning Joe" co-host Mike Barnicle fawning over Sanford, with Barnicle praising Sanford for his "honesty" amid the fallout over a 2009 revelation of an affair with Maria Belen Chapur, who is now Sanford's fiancee. Barnicle asked Sanford if he thought his honesty would "come back to hurt" him during the campaign.
"That is some in-depth reporting," Colbert said. "Woodward and Bernstein may have had 'Deep Throat,' but Mike Barnicle is doing something similar to Mark Sanford."
Then he said something like he hopes Barnicle can breathe through his nose.

again, though, he gave Stephen more bullets. i have to say, this is his job right now. the interviewer, although seemingly retarded, is giving the proper juxtaposition to Colbert going off into small "bits". it's not Colbert hour at a comedy festival, but yet the producers know that their biggest "commodity" is Stephen's "antics" during the interview, which would show ensuing hilarious "bits" from his act.
giving the show more edge then probably usually has... they are just simply making more room but having the interviewer be some soulless and logical.

yes, i know, it's not original. it's not even right. it's what's funny, though, and that's why it's done. God, you're narrowminded. you couldn't think for a second that maybe that there are multiple layers to his comedy... and that he's actually a very "conservative" American who values independence and freedom above politics and religion and -isms?
but because it's inherent "whimsy" is over your head, it's therefore not funny, and sucks, and is some root cause for political and social upheaval on TV. you've lost the plot.

It's cute how you assume that those who disagree with you don't form their own independent thoughts.
I don't follow shit, I formed all of my political opinions on my own and the vast majority of my peers for my entire life have been starkly conservative, hateful and racist. I've never met someone who agrees with me 100% on anything, nor do I agree with anyone you think I do 100% on anything. Assuming you know someone else's motivation behind their opinions almost always ends up with you being wrong.
I can almost guarantee you you don't know shit about where I stand on anything; you and others assume that I place myself with the title of a liberal and then agree with all liberal positions when the truth is that YOU label me liberal first because you think what I say aligns with a liberal perspective and then you assume you know all my positions. You automatically place your own presupposed meanings on my words and so, big surprise, there's a self fulfilling prophecy where you think you know where I'll stand on everything.
You think I can't have an independent thought because I point out that Fox News does the same thing you accuse comedy shows of with the only difference being they are serious? Is that really such a difficult conclusion that you think someone else formed it for me?
Maybe that's difficult to understand for you, but anyone with half a brain can see that Comedy Central airs satirical entertainment (which mocks both sides of the media and both sides of the political spectrum) and Fox News posits itself as a "fair and balanced" news source.
EDIT:
Here's a test for you, what is my opinion on affirmative action? What is my personal life philosophy, since you can tell everything about my opinions based upon a few posts on the internet? What do I think about feminism? What about the occupy movement?
And, even better, what are all of your "original thoughts?" If you're accusing me of not having an original thought, you must have a worldview that has never been considered before.

That's EXACTLY why they don't always say straight up what has to be done. Subtlety is one of the best forms of passive aggression. I mean, the best propaganda is extremely subtle. Never underestimate the power of subtlety.

ha, well.. "what needs to be said" is completely a matter of opinion. Generally statements supporting the political beliefs of the person answering the question, which I know is pretty selfish and kinda ignorant sounding. But it's human nature to think that way. In my case I'll just say I lean to the left on most issues. but not all.

it's like when the actor neil parick harris played a character called neil patrick harris in herald and kumar, he isnt really like that.
It's just like Elvis. Elvis impersonators don't impersonate Elvis Presley. They impersonate Elvis's stage persona.

I bet Elvis Presley impersonators are really depressing.

Subtlety is an artform IMO. The only people allowed to say things in the media with a straight face are government and their "followers." If you disagree, goodluck getting a spot with a straight face. If you master mixing humor into your message, or music, or paintings, etc, you have a better chance of being heard and having your message interpreted.
The political people that seem to have the least agenda for themselves and actually seem to care about real issues are guys like Ron Paul and Gary Johnson. They get to be presidential candidates because they have a reputation in politics and lots of money. If a different person had the EXACT same views and represented themselves in a very well spoken manner, if you have no reputation or money, you go nowhere. So people mix some art into it, and their message gets through to people that way (first it's funny, or the lyrics rhyme, or it has a good beat... then people begin to understand it deeper). Not to say all art has some super deep hidden meaning, but some most certainly does.
Woah, things seemed to get kinda serious there for a second
