Why so tiny?
    #1804996 - 08/12/03 09:13 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

There is a casing of wbs with coco and peat that has been fruiting for about 4-5 days. A couple seem like the veil is opening up and they aren't even an 1 1/2 WTF happened. They are orissa indias which were thought to be huge fruits. Any ideas or did I possibly get some other strain sent by accident. The whole casing is covered with them and all the conditions are perfect????

does the casing layer look like it's drying out ?
another cause could be not enough air exchange .

or pH may be too low (acidic).

The air exchange is great 6 times daily, casing isn't dry, not one abort, ph maybe, never buffered it,would that cause small fruits like these

could be part of it .
also gain alone isn't the best substrate for large fruits .
usually, on the first flush, you have a lot of pins all competing for the same food .
the second flush will probably produce larger fruit, but fewer of them .
if you want huge, spawn to straw, manure, or compost .

this guy told me once he had a casing of mushrooms that was a tipically large species. unfortunately for him it only produced about 1 inch fruits. When he went to dunk the casing he saw it had a big spot of blue on the bottom. he believed that the casing was sharing nutrients with the comtam that was at the bottom of the casing and therefore preduced little mushies.

just a story i heard.

by far the easiest way to get big fruits; straw. its like $2 a bale that will last you for months on end and all you need to do is pasteurize it and wait for it to recolonize the spawn. i cant believe the size of some koh samuis i got off of straw, upwards of 40 grams. freaking monsters....

why does spawning to straw produce better fruits?

straw = more food = bigger mush

mushroom size is DIRECTLY related to amount of food...

a large caseing 5-6inches deep (substrate layer) will produce large fruits

small substrate layer, small fruits...
