Pumpkin Inoculations
    #1805085 - 08/12/03 12:00 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hello, has anyone ever tried inoculating a pumpkin? As far as I know it has a sterile inside, and a natural food source. Any thoughts?

i have some pumkins growing outside in my yard as we speak. that would rock if pumkins are a good growing substrate. but if not theyre still cool.

I'm afraid that the inside of the pupkin provides not enough oxygen for the mycelium to grow, though one could try, I suppose. I'd try it on an old (fully grown) pumpkin, as in later stadia the flesh of the pupkin get's a bit looser and airier.

At halloween time, mine always seem to start growing green mold and rotting after a week or two. Prob not long enough to get colonized, but who knows?

well when there growin jus cut out a lil spot and put tyvek around the hole with staples they wont go all the way thru either so that coudl be a thought and the mold is when there off their vine its them rotting so while there still growin just inject em and leave a lil hole covered with tyvek some1 needs to try it same with gourds i have about 2000 of them growin in my back yard

Dont completely dismiss new ideas. It may or may not work, but until someone tries it, or finds out what exactly is in a pumpkin, i wouldnt knock it.

What about drilling a small hole and stuffing some pollyfill in there

IF this would work, then you could run around on halloweed with like 100 mini pumpkins fully colonized and fruiting, and throw them at people on the streets, like mini pumpkin mushroom bombs, and they would bust open and all the kids would be like ' MAGIC MUSHROOMS" then everyone would trip and live hapily after.

im not but a hypothesis is defined as an 'educated guess' which means you need to have a theory or some factual inforamtion to back it up.

if i drill a hole in a pumpkin and bust a nut in there will that save me the trouble of having a wife???

I agree. Probably not a "family", but definitely a wife.

In answer to the origional question, I would say probably not, but fuck it try it anyway.

I am betting if you removed the insides of the pumpkin, air dried it, and then add some vermiculite and re-hydrated it. It wouls colonize pretty readily. Give it a try.

Experimentation is what its all about.

Good luck!

I think that one was plastic. I don't remember. But i'm fairly sure he did not innoculate the pumpkin, just used it as a container for halloween schinanigens.

That is hilarious. I don't know that pumpkin flesh would make good food for the mycelium. When you take into consideration that cubensis is a grain loving mushroom and pumpkin is fruit, it probably wouldn't do as well as a typical grain spawn. Neat idea though... it would make for a good guerilla grow outside hehe.
