But I won't stand for the mispronunciation of Cottoneaster.

I know a few people who think that being verbally articulate somehow translates into being intelligent. I don't fall for it with them either.
You're right though, when in Rome....as long as people get the gist of what you're talking about, what else matters really?

The purpose of Botanical latin is to limit ambiguity. The pronunciation doesn't really matter, though it is nice to say things correctly, it's how it's spelt that matters.

I've worked in garden centers for a long time, and I've always thought it was kinda pompous of garden center people to correct customers. Done tactfully it can be OK, but I've just seen it done with so much ego so many times. Some customers appreciate it, but most of them don't respond all that favorably to it.

It is all in the delivery for sure. Not many do respond favorably to being told they're a dumb ass. It was probably not the intent by those folks, but delivery can sure make it seem like it.

I've known some who it obviously is their intent, but not many. Some people really like to play up the "expert" role. Feed their ego with it.
But I suppose this is a bit off topic. Sorry.

Same here. I'm aware of the convention of using italics for species names, but I don't do it in a setting like a message board discussion because there is no real need to be that formal. If I'm editing an article on WP or something then I'll use the italics.

I think I'm going to amend the rules stating that botanical names must be typed in italics, otherwise they get banned.
Seriously though. I use italics in the hope, I know I'm a dreamer, that some people may wonder why and then delve into botanical latin. It's also something I've done for years and is now habit. I even underline written names in my note books.

So Trichocereus pachanoi is pronounced trike-o-serious pack-a-noi? I feel silly now. (I'll feel even sillier when I get corrected for having the pronunciation wrong anyway).

Not even close. 'Ch' is pronouced as a 'h' sound, c before e stays as 'c' sound. Others are pronounced as is, ie. one letter as one sound. I have several years of formal Latin education, and is a 'pet peeve' of mine to hear Latin pronounced carelessly and without respect, as if it is written in English. Written binomial names still follow Latin rules of grammar, so pronunciation should too, and people should at least give a tiny bit of effort to at least pronounce it somewhat different then they would an English word. I find it particularly nauseating when I hear American 'mycologists' speak mushroom names...

I guess I'll just try reading up on and trying to learn a bit of basic Latin pronunciation when I'm a little bit less high and tired. That said, I'm not even going to try to correct the pronunciation from the last post I made, since I'm sure I'd just get it wrong again.

I dont care how people are pronouncing things. I just wanted people to know the proper way to write the names. They even do it wrong at World Seed Supply.
