Need help identifying please, Tons of pics
    #1802549 - 08/11/03 06:42 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I recently moved to NC from Indiana. I have been shroom hunting before, but never around here so I decided to take a walk out in the mountains today. I have no idea what I found, but I have tons of pictures of them. There were many more, which I identified myself (6 to be exact), none worth keeping unfortunately. It would be much appreciated if I could get some help on identifying the ones I couldn't. Thanks

- First one found, I thought this one looked pretty cool, never seen one before:

-Second, a very neat, bright orange mushroom:

-Third, a LBM i know but never seen this one before:

-Fourth, a small bright yellow mushroom:

-Fifth, a gray\black mushroom:

-Sixth, a light brown/yellow mushroom:

-Seventh, a nice thick mushroom w/ a red cap(has small white spots):

-Eighth, a thick white mushroom w/ "little jagged spikes":

-Ninth, a nice orange stalked mushroom:

Could you also tell me whether or not they are active or non, edible or non edible please.

You have several problems here for asking for help identifying active shrooms:

1. You won't get a good response when you just post a bunch of misc shrooms.

2. There needs to be a detailed description of a shroom in order for it to be identified (see the sticky notes).

3. Without a spore print/brusing you are basically wasting your time.

Sorry to break the news to ya but that is the way it goes.

I didn't expect to get that great of a response from it, just wondering if anyone had an idea to what they were, but thanks for the advice.

First off, nice photos. You found a nice selection.

If you want IDs, then you need to help us out by telling us a few things. The biggest one is the spore print color for each one.

A good second thing would be what they were growing on. It's very important to know whether they were growing on the ground, from wood, from dung, or whatever.

There are also bits of information that we can't tell from the photos. For example, are the caps or stems slimy or sticky or dry? Do they have a distinctive odor?

On many of those we can't tell if the gills are attached to the stem. On each kind you should take one and cut it in half vertically. You can then easily see if the gills are attached to the stem. You should also take one of the halves and scrape the inside with your knife edge to bruise it. then watch for color changes, which can take up to an hour.

On to a few guesses on what you've got.

#1 is a bolete of some sort. I'd probably start with genus Boletus. The spore print color will help us decide which genus.

#2 looks like maybe a Hygrophorus.

#3 is, as you said, an LBM. A spore print and the other info might get us to a genus.

#4 is interesting. I'd like to know what color the spore print comes out. Wildly guessing I'd probaly start with Mycena.

#5 looks like a Melanoleuca, but there are a few other genera it might drop into.

#6 is a Melanoleuca.

#7 is a Russula. You need a microscope to identify them reliably to species.

#8 is a puffball. Of all your finds, it's the one most easily determined to be edible. Cut it in half. It should be solid and white all the way through. If the skin is thick and tough (you'll know) or the inside isn't white any more or there appears to be a mushroom inside then you shouldn't eat it.

#9 looks like a Hygrophorus. If so, the gills should have a sort of "waxy" feel if you crush them with a fingertip.

Happy mushrooming!

good stuff man. take some spore prints if you want us to figure out what they are further, but toxicman did a perty good job... I would just go from his post and look in reference to compare the spore print to what toxic man thinks those are. Peace-
