There's no doubt that prepping can pay off, and in all likelihood it will pay off for those who have invested the time and energy. My problem with a lot of them is the fact that they have decided to stockpile goods in once location, usually their home. 300 lbs of stockpiled food isn't going to do damn bit of good if they to leave home. It's also necessary to possess the skills required for surviving outside of the comfort zone. I actually have cahes of supplies scattered across the western part of my state so that I can stay on the move if needed.

if you guy a battery back up for your computer or put a few gallons of water back for an outage, saving money for a rainy day... you're a prepper

He's not a loon.
That makes me weary
Ay well there isn't anything wrong with stockpiling a few months of food and some survival supplies. It's just kinda pointless to, say, stockpile enough canned peas and dehydrated food to last a person 5 years if that person has diabetes and no extra insulin. Likewise, investing in explosives equipment and/or more then 2 guns per person makes me wonder "why?".

To a degree, absolutely. There's clearly a distinction between people with basic necessities and people who are on those shows.

I know this thread hasn't been bumped in a month, but with the month of December upon us, I felt like putting an idea up for scrutiny. After the Gods of the Maya rain their alleged doom down upon us, I have a feeling that the new currency will not be gold and silver, as a lot of folks think. At least not initially. The new currency will be skills and goods that are consumable, IMO. What good is a small chunk of metal? Will it feed my wife and children? Probably not. But if I brew fifty gallons of homemade wine and trade it for meat? Yeah, that WILL. So I am doing MY prepping by stockpiling the necessary ingredients for home brewing (and mycology, since lets face it, drugs are pretty much currency NOW), along with a dozen or so jugs of pre-made wine. Have gone to some lengths to build a cache of canned/dry goods and water as well. Oh and water purification tools. I have about twenty water purification kits for campers, as well as two Pur pitchers and two boxes of replacement filters. And a 9mm semi auto handgun. No long range firepower to speak of, but if push came to shove I would certainly barbecue the neighbor's dog... or the neighbor for that matter.
Anyhow, my point (sorry for rambling) is that I feel that society's desire for recreational mind-alteration will keep me and mine safe and fed. I plan to be the local brewer/mushroom guy.

Synthe said: So anyways, what do you guys think of the show?
How would you prep if you don't already?
ok, so a few months ago my brother mentioned me being a prepper, I'm not, I just know hoe to make effective use of shit around me, have a few camping supplies that are no more than that
anyway, after all a few threads on it, several others where the discussion starts and knowing a few doomsday dorks, I decided to watch a couple of episodes
first episode is a couple of guys, one is in alaska and the other in hawaii, hawaii guy is a tard thinking he'll manage to outrun a tsunami, takes no provisions so of course he scores low. the alaska guy, impressive, has shit planned and set up, food stores are lacking but loads of wild game and plenty of fresh water in all the streams (alaska guy had streams but scored low since he bear grylls'd), a few streams were available but of course moose and bears could kill you, his water score was like 15 or 17 or some shit
second episode, some chick and her family, he's a Hatfield, yeah, the same line as the feuding Hatfields, anyway, she's got like 2-3 clean streams and an artesian spring on her property, now springs are typically very clean sources but for some reason she only scored a 7 on her water because all of her water sources were outside of her house... seriously, WTF kind of survival experts rank one guy a 15+ for water availability while another is ranked at a 7 and both have the same outside sources for water. who the fuck made these grading rules

But yeah Pris, I noticed quite a few similar inconsistencies in that show. One guy scored high because he said his home would be a refuge for others in his locality (thereby creating a "herd effect") while another scored low for the same reason (because lack of secrecy exposed them to theft, violence, etc.) The people that run the show are just exploitative, and they picked up on something that would get ratings. Don't think they have a friggin clue what they are talking about.

No, I'm just messing with you. I've watched that show a few times, it seems like a lot of those people don't really have a sustainable plan. My plan is to just beat off until I starve to death.

Would love to see THAT on the show... "And here's my bug-out bag. I have 18 issues of Swank and a half gallon of Jergens."
