to pasteurize or sterilize

I was wondering what you all think about sterilizing your casing mix. Some say to just pasteurize the casing mix and they are against sterilizing but then is there a better chance of contamination? I am planning on using a 8 part verm, 8 part peat moss, and 1 part lime flour. Thanx a lot.

Thanx lil kussh i appreciate your opinion, here is a tip from shroomgod's straw tek where i got the idea of pasteurization

A great casing mix is 8 parts peat moss, 8 parts vermiculite, 1 part lime flour. Saturate 80% of it with tap water then mix in the remaining 20% dry to get the moisture right. You can pasteurize the casing by cooking it at 160?F (that's the warm setting on most ovens) covered with foil for 2 hours. Do not sterilize the casing. Many respectable mycologists discourage sterilization of the casing.

what kind of bulk substrate are you using?if your just using verm, peat moss, and lime flour.use the microwave.nuke it for 5 or 6 minutes, stir it up real good then nuke it for again 10 minutes.remember to add extra water.that strawtek works good i've used it and had great success.

IME materials used for casing layers like coco coir or peat moss and verm sterlizing is best, but for bulk substrate like straw or poo
pasterizing is a better way to go.good luck

pasterisation is only used for bulk spawn that contains benificial endospores. ie dung and straw. for everything else non nutritive, sterilise
