Any way to trace a Post Office drop box?
    #18022632 - 03/28/13 06:34 AM (11 years, 1 month ago)

Let's say you wanted to mail a small package containing some well disguised, although not quite legal, herbal supplements. We'll also assume you aren't stupid enough to use your real return address nor are you stupid enough to leave the package covered in your fingerprints.

If you mailed it by dropping it in one of those blue USPS drop boxes, does the Post Office put any marks on the package/envelope that indicates which box it was delivered through? I figure they do mark it with the servicing Post Office branch, but what about the specific drop box?

If it's anything like  Priority mail, they will have a record of what processing centers it went through.

I'm not sure if regular mail gets tagged or tracked in any way. Wouldn't it be post-marked by the office that receives it?

I doubt that they record which box it was dropped in.  That would be a lot of extra and unnecessary work for the person who empties the boxes.

You could mail a couple small packages to yourself from different boxes and see if the markings are the same.

They will know which city/town it came out of and maybe which processing plant as well, that's about it. Make sure to wipe any finger prints off your package if you want to be careful and you are good to go...
