Discoloration on cake and perlite.
    #1800988 - 08/11/03 08:10 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I was just taking off the first flush and I noticed there was a sort of purple coloration on my cake and on the perlite beneath one of hte biggest mushrooms.. I think it dropped its spores.. is this what would happen?

Precisely what has happened don't be alarmed because they pose very little risk for contams I usually leave em in there and flush my terranium after I'm done with water and pour the water in a compost pile somewhere;)

so does this pose any threat to any of the other cakes or mushrooms?? should I feel somewhat of an urgency to clean it up?

um ghosty...read what bleeding said between "don't be alarmed" and "i usually leave em in there"

if you're an absolute neat freak...you can go ahead and clean it up...it's natural to feel the urge to do so...those are your lil babies after all...

You wanna clean your terrarium out completely every few weeks or so. My friend did not do this, and he lost one cake and his ghetto casing to the green shit. He is waiting for the rest of his pinning cakes to finish their last flushes and he is going to trash them, and thouroughly clean out his PMP. The ghetto casing got it after he attempted to dunk and recase it. That did not work out to well. He just used verm from the bag, and it contamed. He has learned quite a bit from the experience though, and he kind of expected it to happen. Yesterday, he removed everything from his closet, and ripped out the nasty old ass carpet in there. Vacuumed everything up and Lysoled the piss out of the whole thing.

interesting lol.. I thought cakes that were fruiting couldn't get contaminated..

how would you tell if it did during fruiting then?

a cake's immune system gets weaker with every flush...around the 3rd flush it's more susceptible to contamination...some strains are more contam resistant then others too...

Well, it is pretty easy to tell. The cake had fruited once, and after dunking it, it smelled kind of funny. He knew it was a bit sickly. Then after being in the fruiter for a couple of days, it had green crap on it. You could smell it in the chamber too. The other cakes have fought it off successfully thus far. After he harvests what is left, he is going to trash the cakes and clean the hell out of it. He will probably boil his Hydroton for a while to clean it, and then bake the hell out of it. This should kill off any spores the mold left behind.

shakta.. I noticed a bit of blue/green color on one of my cakes.. the one I just picked earlier this morning.. could that be a contam.. or would that be damage to the mycellium network due to me picking up the cake and ripping off the mushrooms?

blue is more likely to be mycelium damage...contamination looks more like this...

those dark lines on the caps are possibly spores that floated on top of the caps...spores are microscopic...they're ultra light...the gentlest breeze or any movement of air (this includes convection and evaporation from the perlite etc) will carry them around...
