Tips for a first time monotub grower?
#18006828 - 03/25/13 02:10 AM (11 years, 9 months ago) |

I'm looking to start a monotub soon since I'm trying to reach higher yields for myself and other friends. I was just curios to see if anyone had tips for some of the less obvious details. I know about 90% of what I should know, from pasteurization and spawning of substrates to fruiting and such, but I just want to be sure I'm spot on for my first grow. Also, I do plan to keep this grow as inconspicuous as possible so that my significant other isn't bothered by the fact that I do plan to grow bulk.. Just looking for some tips to keep this low-profile and also highly successful. Any feedback is welcomed, thanks!

Run us through your process, in detail, from step one on up to harvesting, and we will critique it.

What is the 90% you know? we dont want to pop off a bunch of suggestions just to reiterate what you already know.
What are you unsure of?

Haha ok ok, sorry for my low detailed post.. From start: I'll be inoculating 6 bags of the grain (still haven't decided on strain yet, what do you guys think?), my bulk substrate will be a mix of hpoo, verm, gypsum, and coir. I'll be pasteurizing in a 5 gallon bucket with boiled/hot water.
The main area I'm concerned in is the construction of my tub. I've got the basic idea down, but I just want to know if there are any special ways to go about doing this that could improve FAE, light introduction, etc.
Once spawned I know to keep the tub closed for about a week and a half until mycelium colonized the bulk substrate as well, but I'd also like to know what kinds of time frame I should be expecting from spawn to pinning, any temperature requirements for the tub, number of fruiting a I can expect, and just any other type details once the tub is spawned. I'm just one of those people who like to know 100% what I'm doing before diving into something. I generally just do PF jars, and I've got those pretty much licked, so now I'm just trying to do some bulk grows to improve yields.

You mean variety, not strain.
And anyone of them will be fine, they are basically all the same, just pick one.

The bucket tek is not pasteurization.
Furthermore if your substrate consists of anything more than coir/verm/gypsum, you must properly pasteurize it, as the bucket tek will not cut it, and you will have failed before you begin.
Check out the last 2 links in my signature.

Never open a tub and introduce FAE before full colonization. This also releases the built up co2, which could tell it to pin early.
This is why we use clear tubs. It kinda makes it obvious.
Quote:
Tacomandood said: I'd also like to know what kinds of time frame I should be expecting from spawn to pinning
No way to give an exact timeframe, there are too many variables.
A rough estimate would be 2 weeks for colonization, and a week to get pins, then a week for them to fully mature...but that is a very rough estimate.

Tacomandood said: Any temperature requirements for the tub, number of fruiting a I can expect, and just any other type details once the tub is spawned.
Jars/bags/tubs/trays should colonize @ room temperature getting ambient/indirect light.
Main pinning triggers are full colonization, FAE and Evaporation off of the substrate.
Light is a secondary pinning trigger. For tropical species temperature is not a pinning factor.
P. Cubensis are a tropical species. You could colonize at 70F and fruit at 80F with great results.
Light has been proven beneficial during all stages of mycellium growth. Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.
You want ambient/indirect light(on a 12/12 schedule preferably) for colonization and consolidation.
You want direct/intense 6500K light on a 12/12 schedule for fruiting.
Optimal temps are mid 70s throughout the whole grow, but anywhere from 65F-80F is acceptable.
Incubation is outdated/uneeded unless temps in the range stated above cannot be kept.
The inside of the jar is always a few degrees warmer than the outside because the mycellium produces heat..mycellium tends to stall at temps above 86F , and contams thrive.
Fruiting at cooler temps tends to produce denser, meatier fruits, while fruiting at higher temps will often produce hollow, less dense stems.

You will contam, if your going to use poo you have to use proper pasteurization, bucket tek is for coir/verm.

We cant put a time or output on your tubs, its up to genetics. but ive seen as low as 2oz and as high as 6oz w/ MS more weight and consistency with isolates. Temperatures and lighting are the same with monos as with cakes.

Wow ok, it's good to know that the bucket two doesn't full pasteurize or I'd probably end up screwed on this whole thing.. It's probably just outdated info I guess. Anyway, what pasteurization method do you prefer? I'm just looking for the simplest and quickest because the matter of my girlfriend finding out about this whole bulk grow is still a problem for now.

Ok so you said bucket tek is just for a coir and verm substrate; should I just ditch the hpoo and do the coir and verm? Would it have any significant effects on the yields? Or should I just go full on with the whole poo/coir/verm/gypsum mix?
Sorry for all these questions too, I've just seen all your pictures of monotubs you have and I want to grow like that!

This would be up to you, if you are going for simplicity, ditch the manure.
It would be beneficial if you had it, but I have never used it and have great success using just coir/verm/gypsum following Damion5050's Coir tek(Bucket Tek).

Sounds like the easiest option then! It's good to hear from people with experience, thanks a bunch. I'll just do the 50/50 coir and verm then, saves me the trouble of having to go out and get poo. Would you recommend 6qts of spawn still?

Never mind I read the tek.. I'll just start reading more and ask questions later haha. Ok I'll probably be getting my spawn inoculated within the next couple weeks and then I'll move onto the monotub. I'm excited for this! Thanks for the help guys, I'll post a new thread on here once I get my actual tub going.

It is Damoin5050's tek, that is his name, and the tek is more like 80/20, not 50/50.
Spawn ratio is also personal preference.
6 quarts of spawn is a 1-2 ratio of spawn to bulk.
That would do just fine, but a 1-1 ratio(quart for quart) would colonize quicker.
A 1-3 would colonize slower, etc.

I use 5qts of spawn > 1 block of coir/ 2qt verm/ 2 cups gypsum/ 4qts water.
you get roughly 12qts of substrate with the above mix so im using ~1:2 ratio of spawn to sub.
