Running XP on older machines..
    #1798462 - 08/10/03 02:51 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

My girl has a 350mhz p2/96mb ram computer (old as fuck.). Its been taken care of VERY well, and runs VERY nicely. It runs about as well as my 800mhz athlon machine did when I had it.

Anyway, she wants to put xp on it. Think itll work?

The XP CD has a utility that you can run and it will tell you if it will work on that machine.

As Riffic pointed out, you'll need a bit more RAM. Even so, I think you'll find XP would run rather slowly on that particular machine, according to what I've read on the XP forums. Perhaps you should stick with '98 for the time being. Also something to consider is an alternative OS; have you thought about using Redhat Linux? It would help you get the most out of an older machine.

You'll really want more RAM, XP runs like a dead sloth even with 256 megs I've noticed.. if I were you, I would really stick with Win98SE, maybe some flavor of Linux, preferrably something that doesn't by default put Gnome or KDE on your desktop.

Until the other day I was running XP on a k6-2 350mhz. Worked fine.

I'd suggest adding more RAM, though.

I just got an AMD 1800+ with motherboard for $59 at Frys

Yea, don't put on XP, it is such a stable os because it uses alot memory, until you get a nice PC stick with 98.

Just slap in 256 megs of RAM and it'll be fine.
