Since I love the mucro, lets see another pic of them, this time of Trichocereus bridgesii var. monstrosus 'clone B'.

For the record, each leaf unit interval is called a plastochron.
That is the amount of time it takes, basically, in between the production of each leaf, which for our purposes are represented by the individual areoles and in these images, their mucro or leaf tips.

The arrangement is called phyllotaxy, these cacti have a whorl phyllotaxy, which is basically that they spiral around the stem. Most plants in Cactoideae have this type of phyllotaxy.

The leaves of Cactoideae generally speaking, are fused into a sheath-like covering around the stem. This forms what we call the chlorophyllous parenchyma, a fancy term for the green photosynthetic layer, where the majority of the alkaloids are. This is also the site of CAM respiration and photosynthesis in these plants.

The vascular ring inside the stem is what corresponds to the stem in other plants. In other plant families this vascular cambium is situated directly beneath the bark of the stem. This cambium contains the Xylem and the Phloem, which are the conductive tissues that transmit water and nutrition around in the plant. In these cacti however this tissue is covered in the layer of fused leaves and so appears as a ring in the center of the stem.

Cacti did not lose their leaves and develop stem succulence, though that is a common and widespread misconception, rather they fused their leaves into a layer over the stem.

That's it for the moment, more later.

Thank you for the digression. What are these small green nipples called? Are they some kind of pseudo leafs? Not every Tricho is doing these...

Last summer I started my cactus collection.  They're growing pretty well.  I also bought a couple cuttings for more... immediate use.  I put them both in a dark closet in a box where one has been for at least 6 months.  When I finally decided to process it tonight I saw it had grown.  I cut off the green-ish part that had amazingly made its way towards the light.  It's currently under grow lights.  It's not huge.  I'm going to try to get it to root.  Thoughts?

quick question please fellas

I was gifted a nice Peyote grafted on top of a Pachanoi

I assume I treat this as a Loph in terms of watering and care in summer?

the rootstock has a fair bit of corking and I just don't want it to go sideways, I have been withholding water because it is winter here now anyway

Is there some sort of rule of thumb for grafted plants? a fella handles the plant as the graft, or as the rootstock, or something in between?

Thanks

Put him in a (upright) position the way you want him to grow and let him root. Its gonna be fine :greenthumb:

Great, I was afraid he might be too tiny. Do I need to let him callous first?

Always let callous first, and as for too tiny, if you do it right you can get pieces smaller than 1/2" to root

When I get home I'll posts pic of a succulent I rooted, it's about 1/4" tall, I've rooted some really tiny pieces. Easiest way to do so is to take the cactus after it has a nice callous, and dunk in water for about an hour then put in dry soil, and do that every day or so and it'll root really quick

Echinopsis cultivar 'Chocolate' with a reverted pup.  This cultivar is pretty well-documented (the warty brown form) but the reverted form is less common and I've been trying to isolate it to see what the underlying species actually is.

With most Tricho/echinopsis cultivars, the species is well-known, but for Chocolate the actual species is not documented, just the genus of Echinopsis.

Hi excellent people. I have two issues I'm hoping you can help with. First is, what is going on with my bridgesii and how to treat? Not sure if it's bugs or fungus? Second is, does anyone know what the cactus in the last pic is? Was sold to me as a bridgesii but doesn't look like one to me. Thanks in advance, you guys are great...

I remember bringing these up on Reddit when everyone was debating the TBM 3.0 that started being imported from China, basically a Fred version of bridgesii. Many were convinced that it was actually just some other random echinopsis like chocolate, or chocolate itself

I also remember these Chinese TBM 2.0 and 3.0 photos from last year.  I was curious how they were able to isolate that in such a consistent way, I remember in those pics seeing tubs and tubs of TBM 2/3 grafted onto pereskiopsis with each one looking perfectly identical.
