I normally don't grow Peruvianus but he added this Peru Big Blue plant and has it crossed with SS02 and it happens to be the one phenotype of peruvianus I want and those genetics are really hard to find.
He also has it crossed with scop. If I had known what it was I would have bought those seeds well before now but he didn't have a photo of the Peru Big Blue plant up until this year.
It's the one I'm after.
It's totally different from the Matucana types. Thicker, taller and never decumbent or pendant.
Interesting, how different is it from the TSS blue Peru? I love SS02, but damn there are so many crosses of it.

I've not growth the TSS Blue Peru selection but in images it looks much thinner and to have different spines and areoles than Peru Big Blue.
Yeah, I don't have many SS02 genetics right now myself, having lost quite a few to cold, but it is widespread still. I've been meaning to get a cutting of SS02 again as well.

Here's a few up for the winter.I need to clear some type of fungus or similar up on the spineless bidgesii and maybe the torchXbridg. Was hoping they'd kick it themselves but yeah I'm not really a cactus person (though quite prickly)they're just friends that showed up.

I ended up ordering seeds from Misplant that will have a strong chance of growing as crests or monstrose plants.
Pretty much any cross with Olivia or Oscar from his site will do just that and they are much more affordable than the TPM and TPC crosses but provide similar results.

2 seed grown Oscar hybrids I kept for myself and they're just some gorgeous plants. Pachanoi x Pachanoi "Oscar".....the taller non-montrose one in the second pic.

Neat!
I ordered RioM x Oscar and Helen X TPM.
It was hard to decide what to get, he has a lot of nice crosses for sale. He's made over 1000 crosses.
I love that guy.

I haven't even checked up on any listings in a couple years because I'm just too easily tempted and am trying to show some restraint.....Unless any fresh Jourdaniana seeds were to find their way to me but yea, really amazing varieties and selection over there.

A pic of Short Spine Matucana Trichocereus peruvianus. This is a cutting of the plant called KT-Ogun by some. It was the T. peruvianus that was shipped from Peru for the Obunbodede study, but which was not allowed to be used in the study because of academic reasons. I obtained it from someone directly involved with the study.
It's actually one of the more difficult plants in that, under certain conditions at least, it can be much more rot prone than many other forms of this species.
One of the interesting aspects of this plant is the pronounced mucro or leaf tips.
Check this out:
 Same plant.
Neat eh! I love these things.

Since I love the mucro, lets see another pic of them, this time of Trichocereus bridgesii var. monstrosus 'clone B'.

For the record, each leaf unit interval is called a plastochron. That is the amount of time it takes, basically, in between the production of each leaf, which for our purposes are represented by the individual areoles and in these images, their mucro or leaf tips.
The arrangement is called phyllotaxy, these cacti have a whorl phyllotaxy, which is basically that they spiral around the stem. Most plants in Cactoideae have this type of phyllotaxy.
The leaves of Cactoideae generally speaking, are fused into a sheath-like covering around the stem. This forms what we call the chlorophyllous parenchyma, a fancy term for the green photosynthetic layer, where the majority of the alkaloids are. This is also the site of CAM respiration and photosynthesis in these plants.
The vascular ring inside the stem is what corresponds to the stem in other plants. In other plant families this vascular cambium is situated directly beneath the bark of the stem. This cambium contains the Xylem and the Phloem, which are the conductive tissues that transmit water and nutrition around in the plant. In these cacti however this tissue is covered in the layer of fused leaves and so appears as a ring in the center of the stem.
Cacti did not lose their leaves and develop stem succulence, though that is a common and widespread misconception, rather they fused their leaves into a layer over the stem.
That's it for the moment, more later.
