Been awhile. Left to right: Mutant Scop x (Bridgesii x op) dubbed "Boobilicious" because it usually makes boobies. NoIDs, more NoIDs, and Koehres Bridgesii.

Havent uploaded in a while. 14 pups sprouted since mid-july

I am curious as to what the black spots that I just noticed on #1 are. Seems almost like rot, but I am unfamiliar.

Also, I used to think #3 was a San Pedro, but now that it started growing after rooting, the large spikes at the end remind me more of bridgesii. Any opinions?

Thanks

Color of the new needle growth sure looks a lot like my bridgesii.

3 is some kind of hybrid, might have some bridgesii in it but definitely isn't full bridge. Kind of looks like the SunSpine bridgesiioid

Interesting post about cactus anatomy.

https://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1560660/

What are spines and areoles?
The answer is they might not be what you think they are!
Enjoy!

Anyone else as excited as I am about Misplants new crosses and seeds that will be available soon?

I can't wait to get some SS02 x Ogunbodede seeds started!

Ever notice that the Ogunbodede clone, aka Matucana pachanoi, is fairly light in color? It seems like several of the more impressive selections of pachanoi are.

I was given the clone by someone involved with the original study, so I know this is authentic. It seems to be lighter in color than many of my other plants. I once heard that darker green was better, but now I am not so sure. What do other people think?

I think the darker green part that indicates good medicine is the inner flesh of the plant, like the inner flesh is darker green

That makes sense, but I remember a discussion about 20 years ago I had with a grower who had compared the activity of plants and he told me that in his experience those that were of a darker shade of green were more active when he tried them in similar amounts. I trust him and I am sure he would not have claimed this if it was not accurate in terms of his own experience. However many strong clones seem to exist that tend to have a lighter shade of green.

I have most of mine in the garage now.
I have a remote thermometer there to see how cold it gets but I swear it just gives me anxiety every time it drops.

I just learned that Misplant is going to be releasing a bunch of seeds in bulk.

Gram packets ranging from $25-60 on average, for a whole bunch of things. A gram is something like a thousand seeds. At $60 for a gram that's around 6 cents a seed! I also noticed that he has several buy one gram get one gram free deals.

I think he even has Bridgesii SS02 x Pach Olivia grams for sale next year. Crosses with Olivia produce several monstrous and crested offspring. It's a really cool plant. I have several seedlings of things like Olivia X Scop that are crested.

I want to try to get some of the SS02 X Ogunbodede seeds that should come out sometime next year as single packets. I admit it, he is hands down my favorite breeder of cacti. I just wish I could afford more of the cooler crosses he makes, but with his new prices and crosses I think I can!

Don't tell him, but I found a way to sneak a peek at his new bulk seed page without his permission, before it posts on new years day. Its funny because I made his page view counter go up before anybody was supposed to be able to visit that page. I think he might have figured it out though because I can't seem to pull up the page anymore, but I saw some really cool and affordable crosses during the short time I was able to access it.

I wouldn’t worry, as long as they’re not wet. I’m just raw dogging it in a shed with mine with no thermometer, just as long as it’s 20 or above outside, they’ll be fine. Zelly is one cool grumpy old man.

Oh, I lost several hundred cacti to cold in my garage last winter.
There was a cold snap and the temps dropped to 18*f for something like 36 hours in the garage. Only a few plants made it without trouble. Plants with Torres&Torres genetics did rather well though, interestingly enough as did actual Torres&Torres clones. I'm using the remote thermometer to see check and see if I need to crack the door from the house to the garage and allow a bit of warm air from the house into the area with the cacti to keep them alive. I've had to do this several times already this year. I need to insulate the garage walls and doors and then this issue should be resolved.

Is Misplant or Zelly or Bob or whatever grumpy?
I've bought seeds from him on occasion.
I know I've read some complaints about him here and there but my interactions with him over the years have been pleasant and quite entertaining. He is strict about some stuff but he seems to have a great sense of humor too. He has a notoriously low tolerance for certain behaviors but I'm not sure that is him being grumpy. I wonder how many of the complaints are legit? I honestly have no idea. He might like cacti more than he likes people, but that might be a feature rather than a bug, as they say.

I've not met him but I know some who have and they had nice things to say about him. I know he grows and breeds cacti out of a love for the plants and their flowers and I love how enthusiastic he is about cacti.

I'll be sad when he stops breeding and or selling seeds.

My condolences to your cactuses, I hope you don’t lose anymore to the cold.

He’s never been grumpy to me personally either lol I don’t know why that description stuck with me.

I suspect I am grumpier than he is.

I try to keep some cuttings of my favorite plants in the house.
I also have several hundred seedlings growing under lights indoors, so even if I lose everything in the garage I'll still have more cacti than I know what to do with.

I've been wanting to give some away here, as well as other things, but that would mean selling them for the cost of shipping them, which isn't allowed here as long as a vendor sponsor sells cacti. I tried to ask about cases where the vendor is out of stock or doesn't have the plants I can offer, but there has been no answer about that yet. I can't afford to ship plants and seeds to people and don't have anything I desire for trades. Maybe in the future I'll arrange something on another site. But yeah, even if I lose everything in the garage I will still have plenty of cacti. My eggs aren't in only one basket, so to speak.

Now I am annoyed.

Misplant came out with a lot of crosses I want.
I thought I knew what I wanted to buy and now I can't decide.
My budget and space is limited so I have to think about this.

I wish I could order from him right now lol
I have to stay content with my ikaros and pacific cactus seeds for now.

I'm waiting a few weeks, I think, to make my order.

I normally don't grow Peruvianus but he added this Peru Big Blue plant and has it crossed with SS02 and it happens to be the one phenotype of peruvianus I want and those genetics are really hard to find.

He also has it crossed with scop.
If I had known what it was I would have bought those seeds well before now but he didn't have a photo of the Peru Big Blue plant up until this year.

It's the one I'm after.

It's totally different from the Matucana types.
Thicker, taller and never decumbent or pendant.
