How are your trichs that thick growing in a windowsill? I keep mine outdoors in mostly full sun and they still grow etiolated. Eastern nc

They get full sun most of the day... also I do not fertilize more than 2-3 times a year. Growth isn't the fastest (not slow either) but it picks up pretty well and they are getting even thicker now. My soil mix is 50/50 gravel and a heavy clay based topsoil. I water every week or two. My max temps are 90F in the summer and 30F in the winter with most days being around 70ish

Are you talking about cuttings or already established plants? Because depending on the length and thickness of the cutting it will usually etiolate a little bit no matter what. I'm also in NC.

Both, I'm thinking about moving my stuff to a family members house next spring where I can put my stuff in the middle of their backyard for all day light. All my stuff is on a balcony at my place that is blocked by trees in the morning

Yeah a 50/50 or 40/60 mix of organic soil and mineral like perlite or pumice.

Is that yellowing rotting ?! It's went all summer and been fine, now I see some yellowing and it's slightly squishy
I would like to save the plant , looking like I might have to remove the pup and root that by itself as a new plant and maybe chop off the yellow part? And hope for new pups after I cut some off?

2 months and 10 days later , I've finally got a root popping out in the little pup I saved , the stump also survived - cut off that yellowing
Haven't looked at The stump since I put it up, hoping next season it pups some more

Had this cooking since 2020, maybe this is of interest to somebody.
I grew these from seed that a member passed along. They were neglected and abused and still grew like hell when they had a chance.
July 2020

Sept 2020

Dec 2020

They sure grow up fast. These were grown mostly under artificial light - a single 315w CMH in a 4x4 grow tent. They spent a summer outside and gathered a thrips infection, which was defeated with some citrusy-soap spray, but it damaged the cacti too and you can see a ring on them from that period.
Jan 2022

Sept 2022

After a harvest, grafted bridgesii on to pachanoi as I prefer it.
Jan 2023

May 2023

I've winnowed this down to mostly bridgesii in a 2x4 tent. What I've noticed is that I see healthy growth even if I fertilize every time, and the soil is 50/50 perlite/peat with compost and worm castings. They grow fast and take watering quite well.
They also seem to like lots of root space, and I think they did better as the container size increased, until finally I'm using a 12" deep planter and a communal planting.
After the last harvesting they are now fewer and under LEDs of similar brightness:

If I were to start again I'd put them straight in the planter at 2-3" of growth, and pack as many in as I could fit. I'd also pick only bridgesii, as they're significantly more potent and the growth habit is taller and lankier. "Sea-of-green", only with bridgesii.

Last winter I put my cacti in full dormancy by putting them in the dark in the basement.
Right now they're in a window getting winter sunlight in the great lakes region. I've cut watering to once a month and haven't seen any etiolation from this setup.
Should I leave them there? Or give them even less light for winter?
nm: I moved them. I want them a little cold so they're better acclimated to the cool spring when they go back outside.

I would give them no water for about 3 months. Temperature plays more of a role than the amount of light for sure. It's not like in the wild where they go dormant it's as dark as a basement ya know? It's just colder and drier.
They can handle temps in the 20s for brief periods because they produce a sort of anti-freeze, so as long as they're protected from that extreme cold they'll do fine.

We do have some windows in the basement. Enough to navigate without turning the lights on during the day anyway.
I'll cut way back on watering. Last year I watered once a month during dormancy.
Appreciate the feedback and information
