So my cut is starting to throw roots when I pulled it out to check it I noticed  this it’s not soft or mushy but since it’s my first time striking roots on a cut I figured I’d ask if its ok.

Sure you could . why not ? It's going to pup out of where that cut will be so you may want to make 2 cuts and have another further down to support the weight of the pups imo.

If the graft takes, then can I cut off any pups that form? Would that harm the stock or will it divert that energy into the grafted tissue?

I'm looking for some advice on my cacti. I rooted two trichs last summer. The first one had an issue with thrips that damaged the tip, but the new growth from this year looks good. I'm thinking of cutting off the middle, browned section and rooting the cutting and using the bottom as graft stock for loph seedlings. Is it best to wait until spring to cut and graft? The loph seedlings will be about a year old at that point.

The other trich recently bent over the middle and appears to be damaged with a root like projection coming out from the opposite side of the bend. You can see it above the twist tie in the picture. What is it?

That second picture looks hella thristy, like "Hey my rootball is compact so I'm not taking up enough water" thristy.

No need to wait until spring to do your graft, I'd say go for it now.

It seems it was thirsty, it has perked up a bit after getting some water. I think I underestimated how quickly they dry out in the summer heat.

Thanks, I'm going to go for the graft this week. Only one way to learn! And if it doesn't work I have 20 other seedlings to work with

To answer the question on grafts as I'm sure someone else prob already has i typically wait till pups are at least 4 to 6 inches long and can be buried a few inches deep.

I will just use washed playbox sand till they take and i hardly even water mine for a few months. I'll spray them time to time with a spray bottle so the stoma take in some water . I don't put them in all day outdoors direct sunlight but a sunny window with a couple hours of direct light a day and you will be surprised how fast they create root meristemic growth .

I have just gotten my first few huanus and im finding very little on content .

Trout had an old pdf on a number of species but huanucoensis was not listed prob due to the date of the document .

What is the consensus on these fat bois

Asking for a friend haha.

No but I love the giantness of them .

Im assuming they will be lacking in light when side by side to bridges but I figure at least they can be good breeding stock if not just for aesthetic value as well.

Yeah like frog said they can handle a lot of darkness. I ve had some in only moderate light all winter last year.

They got seriously etiolated but i was surprised how well they survived on little water and light . i won't be doing that to them this year but as a test you can see that they are some of the toughest plants.

Only my ayahuasca vine s seem to be comparable in toughness so far.

You could always sow half. Then if the germ rates are terrible, you can try soak the remaining seeds with 500ppm-1000ppm GA3 (50mg-100mg GA3 + 100mL H20) for up to 24 hours. I've seen a grower state he had an 85% germination rate on 25 yr old tricho seeds using GA3.

I ease off watering them in preparation for winter.  Drop down to once a month in late fall and all winter they only get watered once or twice.

Light is very minimal.  Just the ambient light from my basement windows.  Enough to navigate by but not enough to comfortably read.

Temperature is also 50 degrees or so.

Mine went into dormancy and didn't put on any noticable growth over winter.  Etiolation or otherwise.  And they still doubled and tripled in size over the rest of the year (they're still young, so doubling and tripling at this point is still under a foot a year).

Got these seeds from my favorite breeder of cacti.
The cross here is Nitrogen's TPC crossed with a Short Spine Trichocereus peruvianus from Matucana, a selection often called KT Ogun.
It's a sweet looking cross.
These guys were planted as seeds in April, so they are about 6 months old.

I love growing cacti from seed.

Note that KT Ogun is not the same as the Matucana pachanoi that is called Ogunbodede after the author of a study involving it.
The KT Ogun plant was also procured for said study but was not involved due to academic restrictions, if I recall correctly.

Thanks!

Here is a group shot of the most recent batch of seedlings in my little tent.
They are all Trichocereus but many of them are not San Pedro types.

I'm using a small tent and a high bay LED light from a hardware store.
Simple but effective.

Will my peruvian apple cactus produce mescaline? Also, can you graft Bolivian torch onto peruvian apple cactus?

Probably but I don't have a lot of experience with grafting so I have no idea.

Does the scion need to be grafted onto the little circle in the middle of the cactus to grow.

No, but it helps.

Grafts involve callus tissue layers, they do not create vascular unions as thought previously.

It isn't like splicing an electrical cord or reattaching a severed finger.

The two cut surfaces reinitiate callus tissue, which if in contact with one another then become as a single organism, but the early notions of graft union being akin to a lining up of tissues is not correct. There was a paper about this awhile ago but I forget the title and author.

However, lining up the tissues results in far better graft unions and higher rates of success. Part of this is ensuring that there is enough contact that the surfaces do not dry out or warp, which can push the graft off and ruin the effort.

There are numerous excellent grafting guides for cacti out there online and in books. I am partial to the material in fellow Shroomery member Keeper Trout's book series on Sacred Cacti, which can be found online including at the site I linked to previously which has the book, Cactus Chemistry by species.
