Since I'm already here amongst people with way more experience, this seems to be an adequate time to ask a quick question..
I got a hydroponics kit a while ago that has rooting gel in it. If I put some of that on the bottom of a small cutting will that increase its chances of rooting sooner/successfully?

Speaking of trichocereus species, I've found that if the plant is small it is easier to root in moist soil, however the older they get the harder they are so I could see how a powder type rooting hormone could help! I will try this next season with a few cuttings, some with and some without for comparison.
Also NOT speaking of astrophytums they are a real asshole to root but I've found a easy way to root the assholes! Just sit them on wet vermiculite and they root in 2 weeks! Fancy that, I've killed about 50 over the years and could have all survived if I knew wet verm was the answer! Damn lost my cv lotusland only last year cause it got too big for the stock and I had it in soil trying to root if only I knew. This info if not already known should be noted!

So how long do you wait for sprouts? I have had seeds sealed in a zip-locked bag in the sun for about 16 days now and nothing yet, I'm wondering how long should I wait? The weather was a bit cooler when I first put them out, the soil has been kept moist, usually when I open the bag I'll dump the little excess water out of the bag not much at all mainly from the condensation dropping off the bag.

You don't want them in full sun. You can cook them if they are in full sun. Did you sow them on the surface?

I placed the seeds in a plastic egg carton I thought I placed them directly on top of the soil but I cant seem to see them anymore. How much sun should they be in before they sprout? Like tucked under an awning to just get some ambient sun would that be preferred?

They don't need direct sun just light so in the shade they will be fine. Temps do make a difference for germinating seed I cant remember what is recommended as I grow indoors with my room at around 35 degC but I would think 25-30 degC would be close to being a good temp. Is the soil still moist?

I think mysubtleascention means, the humidity encourages roots to grow but don't put the cutting directly in the water. It is suspended above. I have seen a similar way for rooting, the cacti sit on a wire screen suspended above a wet substrate.
