That crest is stellar!!! It makes me giddy to think of how many trichocereus there will/are growing throughout the world with the Internet connecting everyone allowing us to trade/buy/sell these beautiful magical cacti in a moments notice. I mean really with a few taps on the phone screen I can have new genetics in a few days. Im excited to take a trip to the mother land and see them growing where they orginated.

You were right About the cutting ferrel. He did lead me to another massive one around the corner with some reverted pups that I could take when they get a little bigger

Some of my trichs have put on some real growth this season. How could anybody not appreciate the beauty these plants posses? The more I look at my cacti the less I think I'll be able to cut any down for consumption.

I wish I took a before picture but it was an emergency situation and I had to act fast.
Basically a 5 foot+, potted T. pachanoi YOWIE received a fairly hefty bump during a relocation move. I wasn't present otherwise this wouldn't have happened.
The bruise resembled a bruise on an apple with minimal broken skin and weeping. Saw it a day before and knew then I should have got out the surgical equipment. A secondary infection was present, one that swiftly dissolves the plants cells. I waited 24 hours due to being in good company, and I feared it was too late. I feared it had reached the core and once that happens it travels up it and then outwards destroying the cactus from the inside out. Usually unsalvageable.
After surgery:

Picture taken 6 weeks ago. If you pretend the wound is a clock, between the 12 and 1 hour marks, there's still some rot there. If this is left then it will soften and infect the cells next to it in a matter of hours. I'd already cut the rot out before this picture and after this picture I cut the remaining out.
Reason for not just cutting the top off is because the plant is quite tall and probably about to flower. Time isn't something you can just hurry along. I wanted to save the aesthetic value of the plant.
2 weeks after surgery:

Rot is no longer present. Even though you can see the core it didn't move into it. I was quite happy and the plant is also happy from what I can see.
Tools and method used:
I used my finger initially to scoop all the rotten goop out of the wound, not letting it touch the soil in the pot. I discarded all goop . A finger can also gauge how deep the wound is without sticking a knife into it which will infect cells deeper in the plant if punctured. Then a teaspoon was used to clean up with. The inner flesh of Trichocereus is like that of an apple and it's easy to carve out a wound like this with a teaspoon over a knife.
Once I thought I'd got enough rot out and back to clean flesh I then make my final scoops. In between each scoop I sanitised the spoon in hot soapy water and dried with a clean towel. This is important as to not infect clean flesh.
I cut a little 'V' notch at the bottom to draw away any liquid or let pooled water drain.
Then used the sun to dry out the wound quickly and kept the plant dry until a scab formed. Not undercover, just sheltered. It's now back out as normal.

I hope that Yowie recovers, Karode. I am very interested in getting some of the Aussie-Tricho genetics, eventually.
