The taller ones makes it pretty much impossible to move without having the taller one fall over under its own weight. Normally I overwinter them inside my house, but given the immobility it looks like I'll have to leave the big guy outside. I'm scared it will die though, and my cacti are like my pets
Does anyone have experience and/or advice for overwintering my pach? I'm in zone 6a-6b. We get temps as low as 0, and wind chills can get subzero. We have two or three snows a year, and usually at least one ice storm. The plant will be on a balcony with a roof overhead, so I should be able to shield it somewhat. Thanks in advance for any advice!
I've also heard that letting them overwinter outside increases chances for flowers, but right now I'm just worried about making sure it survives.
Cut and consume?

I had considered this but I'm pretty sure it's a PC, so even all three feet probably wouldn't be worth it. I think I'm going to take a cutting about halfway from it and start getting it calloused. Hopefully I can get it rooted before winter, and both will be a manageable size for bringing indoors to my windowsill.

I have my cactus in full sun with not many other options. A few are getting quite yellow. Have been thinking about rigging up a shade cloth. What do you guys think? I mean they will have plenty of shade soon with the Northwest fall coming.
My cacti get shade from my,trees but the sun is on and off throigh out the day. They do yellow in full sun. Some do not. But if, you cant have thwm in the shade its cool. The color just wont be all, there.

I had it labeled as a validus but I am not sure what it is exactly, maybe a pach x validus or something. Anyways it's a real beauty, I wish I had a scale to weigh it as it's chunky! Going to let it callous and get it rooting soon, I bet it will grow like a champ

This is the biggest graft i think i ever saw, amazing. How long has it been on the pere?
Not positive on the date but I believe it was grafted for 2-3 years or so.
Before that it was just a little seedling.

I'm in the PNW region as well. I have my trichs out for the summer. I have them on my balcony which is on the west side of the house. They don't get full sun until around 1:00 and then have it for the rest of the day. I haven't had any over exposure issues and they have sure benefited from being outside growth wise.
Do you haul yours in for the winter? If so, approximately when?

I have been surprised too, I think it's at least partially from not letting it get root bound, I also have fertilized it a solid bit over the years.
Could be genetics too though as most of my grafts end up rooting way earlier, I even have 1-2 in similar sized big pots that started rooting
Also I used one of my biggest pere's at the time for it so it could just be from having a nice big stalk with plenty of root space and nutrients
Thanks though, I bet that Psycho0 x N1 is a beast

I think I've got some white mold in two of my seedling pots. Anything I can do or should I just toss them? I'd hate to toss two seedlings.
They're in pots in a small tote. I took the lid off and left it off to give it more fresh air. Hoping that'll kill it but idk.

Is the mold on the cacti or just in the soil?
If the latter don't worry, stir up the soil a bit so it airs out better and spray with a diluted hydrogen peroxide mix.
Cacti generally only mold when rotting, if that's the case and it's squishy you may have to do some surgery. But even then you can still save it unless the rot has progressed too far.
I made a super fertile soil mix for some plants and for awhile mold kept popping up all over the surface of many of my plants I never had issues, it was mainly cobweb mold though.

If they aren't dead why toss em. Could try spray some 3% or lower hydrogen peroxide on it to kill the mold. Maybe the seedlings don't care all that much.
Fresh air is good, i have had seeds germinate in full sun on the windowsill and they do just fine besides from getting a little red if the weather is nice. Only reason i'd personally leave the lid on after germination is to save time watering

Sweet. Thanks so much guys. I'll mix up the soil some and hit it with a small amount of h2o2/water and pray haha. Mine are a few months old I guess, but no spines yet. They spurted up and stayed the same ever since. I hate being such a noob sometimes haha

That cobweb mold can be remedied with hydrogen peroxide like musiclovr420 said but ime it dowsnt have to be diluted. You cant water with it like you would with diluted mix but a couple of drops straight works wonders,

I did just that. Used an old spore Syringe, sucked up a bit straight from the bottle, and used the needle to slowly disperse some into the soil as I moved it around. Seems to be gone, I also left the lid off of the box. They're also in a better spot now, so they're getting full sunlight for an hour or so a day. Only worried about the new seeds I sowed since they're right next to the seedlings, but I'm sure they'll be fine.
Thanks for all the help everyone. You guys inspire me with all these pictures. I'll have a juuls X lumberjack cutting coming soon. Just got a big ole pot for it as well. Cacti are addicting as hell.

My cacti live on my roof terrace, and totally thrive under the full Spanish sun. But I don´t suppose for one moment it is as fierce at the Mexican sun they evolved under.

That's good to know. From seed to full grown cacti?

Yeah it's getting bad haha Looking for local shops that carry cacti, especially trichs. I know of somewhere that sells lophs, but they're expensive as fuck for something other then one plant, but they're flowering and such so. I'm saving up for one lol
