Seed grown. Go crazy.

I envy all you who xan grow indoors and under lights. It will be years before i get anything nice. Especially hard grown.

These are my only pampered babies. They are growing better than the outdoor ones, obviously.

And here is that pic of my scop seedlings. And within that group a weirdo comes out. Super easy to spot.

One more question, when do you indoor growers start acclimating to ambient humidity? Not like outside but i would like to open the bags on my windowsill one day.

I've removed the ziploc on seedlings that popped less than a week prior with no ill effects, maybe reduced growth rate but I can't really tell so far (they're now about a month and a half old).

Outside is usally when i do it but even in relative humidity they take a beating on growth. But inside is different. I really want to give these guys a leg up on overall growth. Isowed 4 batches of seeds today. But those are outside in the shade. Even still, after a month or 2 i will probably open tha baggies and let them just acclimate.

What would you guys do with this guy:

It's a 2 headed bridgesi hybrid that pupped once early on, the first pup has grown super slow. Just noticed the 2 new pups forming at the base too  The one in the middle looks pretty sketchy, there is like 0 room for it

Speaking of funny pups check out these:

Brigesii cutting I rooted log style, the first pup was normal but this second one sprung up from the soil :tongue2:

Pachx peru and a peru I also rooted log style, they both took forever to root and pup but I think it was worth it.

Lastly I had to degraft part of my biggest graft today, it was getting unstable and I figured I should finally cut it back:

I had it labeled as a validus but I am not sure what it is exactly, maybe a pach x validus or something. Anyways it's a real beauty, I wish I had a scale to weigh it as it's chunky! Going to let it callous and get it rooting soon, I bet it will grow like a champ :super:

Ferril, I get aluminum disposable pans, poke holes in the bottom, fill em with dirt and sprinkle my seeds on top! I put them in a fruiting chamber set up without the perlite, but instead i pour water in the bottom, enough to  saturate the dirt from the bottom. I give the top of the dirt a good misting and shut the lid. After the initial soaking, i keep spraying the topsoil to keep it moist. They stay inside, in my florida room (!!!!) For atleast 6 months. After that, i take the tote outside to acclimate them to the sun and humidity over another 4 months. At the 10 month mark, if everythi g looks good enough, i seperate them and repot!

You think it will be alright? I would hate to have to cut 1 of the 2 original heads so that would be nice. It just looks so squished

Also thanks, I am really proud of that graft. It's at least 2-3 years old and hasn't even tried rooting. I just kept re potting it when it would get rootbound :awesomenod:

I would have liked to let it keep going another year or two but it was getting way too heavy for the peres stalk to handle  At least the base will pup.

I’ve grown both in zip locks and open tubs, just depends how many seeds I’m planting.

If I only have one packet or I want to keep specific crosses separate ill poke a bunch of holes in a small Tupper wear and fill it with soil and then sprinkle a small amount of rinsed coco coir on top just to help hold some water and its resistance to mold, (iv used both 50/50 soil/perlite and just straight non peat moss soil and both have worked fine for me) I then fill a bowl with water and lower the tuber ware into the water until the soil is fully saturated with water, I then let it drain off any excess that the soil doesn’t want to hold onto. After I lay the lid on top of the tuperwear and zap it in the microwave until the soil is visibly steaming but not too much. I wait till it cools then I sprinkle the seeds onto the top of the fine coco coir, what also seems to help keep mold at bay is I fill a small spray bottle with ¼ diluted hydrogen peroxide and just give the top soil and seeds a few gentle sprays to kill any mold spores on the seeds. Ill then put the Tupperware in a gallon zip lock under a light. I keep them in the bags as long as I can, sometimes I’ll see some mold start to grow on the soil at that point I decide if I want to try another spray of the dilute hydrogen peroxide or if I just remove the whole thing and let the soil dry out some. I’ve never had any problems with sudden hardening off but I live right next to the sea so my relative humidity is usually in the 80-90s so it’s not a massive shock to my seedlings.

For the tub, I try to pasteurize my soil but depending on the side of the tub and amount of soil sometimes I just say fuck it and don’t, I still case with a thin layer of coco coir and spray with dilute hydrogen but since I don’t use air tight lids on the tubs it’s kind of a moot point. The tubs tend to get a little mold on the top soil for me but I’ve never had it bad enough that it over ran or killed any of the seedlings and if the mold keeps spreading ill just remove the lid and let the tub dry out some and that usually resolves the issue. The higher and more constant humidity of the zip lock bag seems to result in better germination rates for me.

I pretty much do what DGB said.  I've sown about 100 bags of seed and have over 100 to go.  Most will be started soon under lights and them moved outside early spring.  These latest batches I mixed the soil, put down a good layer of coarse sand, then sowed the seeds on top of that. Way easier to see the little seeds if any tried to get out of line and hop into another line of different hybrids.

What feral said is that for shade?

I have my cactus in full sun with not many other options. A few are getting quite yellow. Have been thinking about rigging up a shade cloth. What do you guys think? I mean they will have plenty of shade soon with the Northwest fall coming.
