I had to do the same thing Junk. I guess one of the cold nights snuck up and bit the top of one before I moved them inside for the winter. I'm anxiously awaiting a pup from it. My bridgesii really haven't kicked off yet. They like it hot I think.

Over here they are starting to grow fast too. snails are out of dormancy and hungry. keep an eye out all, trich tips are good eating, and short spined cactus are fair game.

Mine have been busting pretty good since I moved to Southern California about a month ago. Just spotted a new pup on one of my bridgesii! It's my super blue bridgesii. I've got a bunch of non PC pedros I need to plant too. Thanks for the reminder about snails. So far no problems here. It's been mostly pretty dry.

Im attempting to germinate some bridgesii seeds. The temperature at night time can drop to around 10°C. Temperature at day is usually easily over 20°C. Can anyone spot any problems with this?
I could keep the pots inside my house but my lights aren't out till around 11pm so would this screw up the day/night cycle or something?
edit: realised pretty quickly I can just cover them up...

My first greenhouse season with cactus! I am curious to find out how these peruvian torches will grow in here north. My greenhouse are about 100miles north from arctic circle so these trichos will get 2months long day without night at all. Now temperatures are only about -2C from +2C at night and +5-15C at day. I have to use heater in greenhouse few weeks before actual summer temperatures will come.
I have taken a picture from my peruvian torches in greenhouse, I hope good results:

Trichos are very hard to grow at these latitudes outdoors but I have fun to find out how these cactis grow under 24hours of sun light without night.
These will get in greenhouse ~13hours direct sun light from morning to night. At night, sun shines from north but do not shine in to my greenhouse. I have heard that trichos love long day length.. Do they love ~2 month long day without night?
Will see.. Before I have grown cacti only indoors so this will be fun to see how cacti grows here in greenhouse.

Respect for growing them in such a hostile environment.

I will. Actually at the moment sunset is ~11:45PM and sunrise is ~2:50AM.. So there are only short period of dusk.. but cause this far of north sunset and sunrise lasts about two hours so next "real night" starts at beginning of September. But still maximum temperature today has been only +7C.. Now it's only +2C outdoors. In greenhouse temperature has been between +15-20C.
I have actually kept these trichos in greenhouse from beginning of May. They have managed to stay alive even some nights in greenhouse has only +5-7C ..but good new is that forecast has shown over +20C day temperatures for many days starting tomorrow. This summer first actual "heat wave" will come and rest of the snow should smelt away.. For local folks +20C is nice and hot weather.
Without greenhouse cactus cultivation outdoors is impossible. My greenhouse is mainly for growing food but I have space to keep few cactus plants there too.

I just visited a friend who gave me most of his Tricho collection. Let's just say I'll never have to buy another Tricho again. Filled up the back of my truck.

Very Cool. Are they just various trichocereus or specific clones?

None named clones. Got a bunch of a particular VERY legit medicinal pachanoi though. And a bunch of bridgesii. And a few other just randoms. Hope to be getting a macrogonus from same friend soon too. He was gonna trade a Juul's cutting for it.
The named clone thing is great, but it's also great to have a very legit pachanoi. Many people say pachanoi is weak. I beg to differ. There seems to be a reason it is the preferred cactus in most of Peru. Can't help but wonder it's origin and who planted it.

I finally have more Trichocereus than just cuttings or tiny seedlings
Bought three Peruvianus from WSS.
v. Ayacucho

v. Matucana

v. Rio Lurin

As well as a terscheckii from someone else

I'm just throwing them into a mineral mix of perlite, black cinder, and Turface for now, since I forgot to buy cactus soil and am too lazy to go to the store. I also want to see if they'll do ok in a very well draining mix, since it rains ~50 inches a year here, and I like to go outside and water my plants

I bet that mix would work just fine as long as you provide some nutrients to supplement it. I have a friend who has been experimenting with growing all kinds of stuff in a particular kind of pumice. I think the turface has similar qualities to it- drains real well, but also absorbs a good amount of moisture.
