I'm looking for some advice on my cacti. I rooted two trichs last summer. The first one had an issue with thrips that damaged the tip, but the new growth from this year looks good. I'm thinking of cutting off the middle, browned section and rooting the cutting and using the bottom as graft stock for loph seedlings. Is it best to wait until spring to cut and graft? The loph seedlings will be about a year old at that point.

The other trich recently bent over the middle and appears to be damaged with a root like projection coming out from the opposite side of the bend. You can see it above the twist tie in the picture. What is it?

That second picture looks hella thristy, like "Hey my rootball is compact so I'm not taking up enough water" thristy.

No need to wait until spring to do your graft, I'd say go for it now.

Looks like a cut etiolated tip from a plant that was already etiolated, I have a piece of PC that looks like that.

Sure you could . why not ? It's going to pup out of where that cut will be so you may want to make 2 cuts and have another further down to support the weight of the pups imo.

If the graft takes, then can I cut off any pups that form? Would that harm the stock or will it divert that energy into the grafted tissue?

It seems it was thirsty, it has perked up a bit after getting some water. I think I underestimated how quickly they dry out in the summer heat.

Thanks, I'm going to go for the graft this week. Only one way to learn! And if it doesn't work I have 20 other seedlings to work with

So it looks like a PC? I’m new to cacti just wondering what cultivar it may be.

Edit: it came from a windowsill plant with poor lighting so yea when it gets established I’ll get it more light.

Could be any type of trich. I've seen bridg and others look like that in that mode too.

I grafted the loph seedling to the trich with the brown section today. How does it look?

They recommend overlapping the vascular rings, which would mean putting the seedling on the edge of the circle.. Also I've found pressure is not needed for seedling grafts, can actually crush/move the seedlings, you only really need a humdidty dome.

I agree. You want to line up the graft to overlap the vascular ring so the nutrients will actually enter the scion.

And, I’m changing the subject back..

Is that yellowing rotting ?! It's went all summer and been fine, now I see some yellowing and it's slightly squishy

I would like to save the plant , looking like I might have to remove the pup and root that by itself as a new plant and maybe chop off the yellow part? And hope for new pups after I cut some off?

When extracting mescaline from Bolivian torch do you just boil the outer green part or also the flesh?

Can Pereskiopsis spathulata be grafted to apple cactus. And if so which would be the root stock. Also if you are growing a grafted cactus on a rootstock will the rootstock go on to produce flowers as well as what's grafted to it or will only the cutting grafted to it produce flowers?

I'm coming up on my first frost since I started growing cactus in pots.  I know I could bring them inside to a cool dark place to over winter, but I have space inside the house and a few good led grow lights.  Which way would you go if you were me?  Cold and dark or warm with artificial light?

I filled my 8x4 flower tent with cactus under led panels last winter. Some got decent growth, extra blue on a few...but others basically refused to grow until it was warm enough for them to be outside. It's like they knew and couldn't be tricked.

I say if you already have the lights and space (and electric prices aren't a factor), try it. Bare minimum it makes the transition back into the sun in easier. They will also do fine in a cold dark spot, but it's a lot easier to sunburn them in the spring.

I always use the center flesh as well, there's definitely alkaloids in there.

Pereskiopsis is used to graft seedlings onto. I'm not sure about the flower question tbh...but I'd guess it's possible but not common for a rootstock to flower with a scion on it.
