I got this cacti in a giveaway about a week ago, got it planted right away but it's been developing this ring of what looks like rot (near the 3rd/4th row of spines from the top)
Any ideas of what I should do? It's in a mix of pumice, biochar, gravel, and a little bit of organic matter. On the north side of a house where it gets little sun trying to acclimate it to the outside. Temps are between 90f/45f.

Wait for confirmation, I'm rusty but here's what I seeing.
It's dry and malnourished. Get some fresh cactus soil, yours looks really woody and solid from that picture, it likes drainage put still wants some dirt to. Keep it on that spot mostly shaded. Water thoroughly in am so water won't sit before evaporating. Allow soil to get totally dry for a full day or two and water again to get it filling back up with water. They don't tolerate staying saturated with water, very important they have dry time between watering even though it needs water. That growth may always be off color, but soon you should see new growth coming in that looks far better.

it is too dry and malnourished for sure. i like the ocean forest for trichs, with up to 30% perlite added in. very good soil for the trichs due to its drainage and aeration. i water once or twice a week with cacti fert and some foxfarm bushdoctor, like all my house plants.
trichs are naturally in a sub-tropic zone and can take a lot of water and nitrogen compared to other cacti.

Thanks all for the replies! I got it bare-root, so I mixed up some soil for it and the black stuff you see is just a top dressing.
I was a bit afraid to overwater but I've given it a good drink now.

Fun fact, someone on Reddit recently sent in a piece of this to get its mescaline content tested and it was at 6.27%
What species is this? I saw one at a store that looked similar but couldn't find much info on it. I got a san Pedro on the way but want to expand and these active cacti seem hard to find.

I think we've known it was potent. Just not very practical for that.
It's a Bridgesii. Cultivar penis B. A is taller.
San pedro is broad term for some Trichocereus. In us a San Pedro is usually pc pach, not potent. But peruvianus(peruvian) bridgessii(bolivian) scopicula, and few more, these are the potent ones. Google trichocereus and you will find what you looking for, eBay ain't bad.

The species I ordered is echinopsis panchoi, I'm sure I spelled it wrong but I looked it up supposed to be one of the few San Pedro's that are potent.

The problem with seeds though vs known clones is that the potency could be all over the place, not to mention the fact that it takes years to see if a seedling is actually decently athletic.

I’d argue against that, it’s more potent and faster growing than peyote, not to mention relatively cheap when you buy a big cluster.

It looks like there was maybe some sunburn, then some type of fungus took advantage. The new growth looks pretty healthy though. Bridgesii are usually more prone to fungal issues. You could treat it with a fungicide...potassium phosphite (phosphorus acid) or potassium silicate are good options if you want to use the cactus someday.
They could use a bigger pot too. A lot of people advise against using rocks as a top dress because it holds moisture in the soil more.
