bambus said: I just planted my first Trichocereus garden last week. It's only day 9 from planting seeds and I got great germination already. I started with: 100 bridgesii 125 peruvianus 125 pachanoi 25 tarmaensis
Quick question, Some of the bridgesii are lighter green and some look a bit pink, are they getting too much light? All the others look nice and green I don't have a very strong light on them, just a 13w led. I'll post some pics later.
How did you go about germinating your seeds? Takeout tek? Or like a seedling tray? The color you're describing sounds like stress from light that's too intense, them anthocyanins.
I'm doing the takeout tek. I put a single ply of paper towel over them to reduce the light for now.

Feels like im gonna need to repot every 6 months at this rate, which is not sustainable for me. I might have to accept them being root-bound after a certain point, unfortunately.

Don't feel bad, some of my plants have been in the same pots for years now.

It's that time of year again!
Finally got these all out a week or two ago. They almost all fit, a few trays of 2-4 year old seedlings and one of babies didn't.
These are the babies that I absolutely didn't have room for but started anyways!

Definitely going to have to sell/trade/gift a bit more away this year.

Hello, all.
I'm very interested in growing active cactus, but in about 4 years I'll be looking to make a move that would make bringing even potted plants difficult enough to be unrealistic.
If I were to get a cutting or two, is it reasonable that I'd be able to get a decent amount of cuts off in the timeframe I'll be at my current residence? How long would I be waiting for an initial 12" I could safely harvest a chunk and leaving the plant healthy.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Im no expert fyi.
How fast your plants grow depends on:
- If they are already rooted or not (rooted will cost more)
- The type and clone of cactus you are getting
- How big they are when you get them (bigger the faster)
- Fertilizer
- How much sun they can get in a day at your property
- Your seasons in general (cant be outside if freezing. do your winters have no sun? etc)
- Soil
I live in socal. Can be outside always. I got mine at 8 inches. They took a long time to root. They are bridgesii. I expect them to grow like 8-12 inches this season. Just started using fertilizer so we will see.
You could cut at a foot I guess. In my case I could have like 4 doses in 1.5-3 years with the 4 cacti (this depends on their strength etc). Could get 8 doses on year 4 if I/you were to eat them in their entirety. This could be like 150-300 dollars of investment. Cacti can be expensive, so it can suck to have to restart. There are probably hydroponic setups and other more complicated techniques that get them to grow faster.
How does that sound to you? Idk what a decent number is for you. I do tend to look at cacti as a longer term investment if your aim is to be at the point where you have enough being produced so that you can take cuts consistently. For example, the cuts that you are going to have to eat due to not being able to move with them could instead be planted to have even more growing cacti. This would then give you a better return later on, but you dont have that option
If someone has a different estimation please post

I live in a zone where cactus would probably have to be brought inside at least 4 months of the year, probably more. Sounds like this may not be a great endeavor at this point in life. Thanks for the info!

Wouldn't hurt to have a plant or two around :P That would be easy enough to move inside.

I don’t know man where there is a will there is a way… Mine were inside from late November to late March.
Regarding your move I was thinking… you could always grow them for the time being, and before you move, cut them, let them callous, and pack them away with your other things until you get to your new place. Unpack them and root them. They can survive months as cuts. Matter of fact it’s a recommended practice to store cuts in a dark and cool place for a while, like 3 months, before preparing for consumption. You could even ship the cuts, or even the uprooted whole cacti to yourself at the new address.

Think I might need to order several cuttings, a couple to sample and a couple to plant. I love watching things grow and I've never tried cactus (except non active nopales).
Anyone gave experience shipping cactus internationally?

What does this shape say about the plant's growing conditions?
I know it was very under-watered. And is that etiolation at the top? I'm obviously very new at this.
If it were yours, what would you do from here?
All input/advice appreciated.

It's a little bit etiolated, I would just repot in a slightly bigger pot with a proper soil mix and ensure it get's enough light and water, should widen out and fatten up eventually with new growth.

It was recently repotted, but I'll be sure to give it more light and proper watering.
Thanks for the input, much appreciated.
