I see. I got fully rooted cacti so I should probs start feeding them. By tea you mean you water with fertilizer while also putting the tomato stuff and worm casting on top of the soil?

edit (4/8): I see the cactus jones recommends every 2nd watering for his juice. Wish I knew the recipe so I could make my own

I use a weakish bamboo leaf tea every few weeks for my Trichs. It grows super fast and I’m hoping it can transfer some of those hormones (pretty sure that’s part of the reason they sell fertilizer made from kelp). It’s high in silica too which if I remember correctly is good for strong growth.
I live about a half mile from the Long Island Sound and seaweed is quite available. Going to make some tea with sea cellophane , bladderwrack and some other red seaweed I haven’t ID’d.  I’ve done some research and I’m pretty sure no seaweed is toxic (at least around here) and are all nutrient powerhouses.

Side note,  the waters here also contain two species that are commercially important sources of natural agar -Gelidium pusillum and Gracilaria tikvahiae.
Needles to say I’d like to try my hand at making my own agar agar for mush cult…that would be awesome haha

Seaweed is awesome. I want seaweed salad now. You should totally make your own agar from scratch, that would be awesome to see documented and posted on here or reddit or something.

@MentalSlavery

I was doing every third watering before but I slowly have been increasing the frequency and amount. I do almost full strength now for the doctor earth liquids for tea, before I was being cautious and started doing 1/3 and just the cactus and succulent food, now I do a mixture of that and the tomato one, and I'll do it multiple waterings in a row now, but I still give them periods of just water if I feel like they got plenty to work with.

It’s warm enough that I’m not worried about cactus survival overnight, but not so warm I’m fine with unlimited April showers whenever that starts up, so I just finally put together a cheap mini greenhouse to protect them from rain and let them enjoy higher daytime temps and very slightly warmer nights. Now they’ll only get the water I want them to get.

Next weekend I’ll probably start taking herbs and veggies out as circumstances dictate, but I want to ensure the plant is mature enough I would have time to notice and treat it if pests become and issue. The greenhouse is open on the ground and the terrain is a bit uneven so even with the flap down bugs can get in for sure.

This is the northwest corner of the building and the buildings are close together and my rear neighbor has a few big box elders and a bunch of arborvitae for a tree wall, so while this spot will get a few hours of direct sunlight a day, it will also get plenty of shade. I’ve been exposing them to ambient light for a couple weeks, and each has recently had a day or two each under a grow light hiked up slightly too high…I’m not too worried about the light being a problem but obviously I’ll keep my eye on them 🙂

In addition to very nearly all my trichs, I have a prickly pear, a myrtillocactus cutting, and two strawberry plants 🙂

I picked up my first Trichocereus today!

:awebig:

I've named him Paul. He is a plump chonker, but that's okay, we don't fat shame. I adopted him on a recent trip to the Home Depot. He's much happier in his new home.

From what I can surmise, he is probably a trichocereus grandiflorus, and it is doubtful, though not impossible, that he has any notable goodies for me. That's probably a good thing for him, as I likely wont be cutting him up later

Grandi sounds about right! I would certainly not attempt to chop it up as you will be sad and disappointed. They do however make lovely grafting stock for pachanoi, bridgessi and peruvianus for "goodies" you seek.

Hi there trichsters. My favourite cactus seems to be having a little trouble. He's a sharxx x psycho0. Just wondering if anyone can tell me what the scarring/weird indentation is and how I might treat it? I did have a few green thrips (possibly) hanging around which I sprayed with white oil and they've now all disappeared. The scarring developed whilst the cactus was outside, but I've subsequently moved them all inside to a well ventilated, sunny spot over winter. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated... cheers

Does anyone know what NPK scale ferts are best for trichs?
Is there anything specific like Guano or bone meal that they really like?

I've heard that pachanoi flowers attract night pollinators like bats, maybe there's some kind of symbiotic relationship with them?

You mean beyond the symbiotic exchange of nectar for pollination?

I’m a novice, but I’d still say it looks like garden variety insect damage to me and if there are no active pest problems then there is no treatment possible or necessary. The damage is purely cosmetic as long as it stays as it is. It won’t heal, but new growth won’t be affected negatively by it and as the plant grows this will be less and less noticeable.

Not a joke, but yeah…human urine. Kelp meal, coconut water, dried and ground banana peel, and gypsum are all commonly added to growing media to benefit the plants, too.

I have had great results with winging it so far, mostly using kelp meal and gypsum, once in a while also using my own urine, undiluted. They’ve done great so far! They seem pretty forgiving, and as long as the plant is getting fed well enough to maintain good health, there’s really no need to lose sleep about fine tuning the feeding regimen. It may grow more vigorously or more evenly if you get it even more dialed in, but this is unlikely to benefit alkaloid production and a massive body of anecdotal evidence actually suggests the opposite is true: that stressed plants are potent plants. If you’re growing show plants then by all means you’ll want to get more precise, but if you’re growing for consumption I honestly don’t see a point in bothering to get overly precise with the feeding as long as your plants seem healthy. Just my two cents 🙂

Do they reproduce like that?
As far as from what I can tell they seem to reproduce asexually once they root well.

I guess I figured they were pretty much self pollinating.
The fruits/flowers seem to be pretty rare, none of my pachanois have produced fruit or flowered yet and they're pretty tall.

The only cacti/succulents I've had flower were my most neglected hedgehog and my jade.

Trichocereus are not self pollinating, you need two different cacti to be able to produce seed

Oh don't worry, if you get deep enough into this you'll be cutting em, but not for goodies. They're great grafting stock.

It seems that certain cactuses will throw out flowers when stressed as a last ditch effort to spread their genetics.

Omg that Climb.. I remember the first time I saw one of those, it was a picture from one in the UK, it's a Sharxx cross right? I would love a piece of that, form of it is awesome.

So 32 days ago I setup a simple experiment to see if a single trichocereus rib would root and it has. It hasn't pupped yet but since there are areoles I assume it will. My next experiment will be if I can get single areoles to root and pup.
