It happens to all kinds of plants, even oak trees. It could also be a vulture or turkey buzzard that tried to land on it and failed. Need to have trail cameras setup on plants.

My old roommate's dog did that to my cut of Eileen. Broke it off clean at the soil. I thought the stump would rot out because it got a bunch of dirt knocked onto it as well. But it survived and now I got two Eileen's growing.

I may have to fix up my little greenhouse this winter because I'm running out of space for my seedlings. Hard to wait until I get a proper floor in here, shelves, etc. I'll have more room on the south side when its halfway through September, I still need to move all of the snake plants inside, Plumeria trees, Avocado trees, etc.
Its probably only a matter of time before I fall on a cactus. >.<!

Actually I’ve seen documentation ok another forum about how a man who harvest trichocereus in the wild does not harvest the growth tip.
Rather he cuts it off and puts it back onto the plant just like a graft. Not before he rubs some tobaccos and dirt onto the wounds. Yes, therefor he intentionally puts dirt inbetween the column and Scion. These are massive wild specimens mind you. Then he proceeds to cook down what he harvested in the desert over a fire so he doesn’t have to carry back lbs of spiny cacti

Hello everyone, It was a hard winter, and now this is going on.
Should I take a cutting, if so, where?
Anything else look off?

Personally, I would cut at least 6" above the dirt if I could while cutting out the skinny part. But I would leave a bit of the skinny on the cutting because it'll callus quick and be under the dirt when you repot up to the more chunky part. That's what I would do. YMMV

They are in a south side sun room atm, should I move inside and under grow lights? I've been switching off and on ( its summer here, atm).

Put it outside in the shade and acclimate it to sunlight. Cactus have no business being in the house during summer!

Looks like one of those common rot with bridgesii. It'll heal if given proper condition.

Black spot, highly contagious. I think I originally got the disease imported on a cutting a few years ago. Affects Bridgesii the most, followed by Peruvian Torch.
Drying them out + sunlight helps but it takes around a month to get the desired results. Its alleged that sulfur can be generously rubbed into the sores with a toothbrush to dry them out, sulfur is also a good fungicide. I typically dust roots with sulfur when aggressively trimming roots or cutting plants.

This is out in the sun all day-- there's also that smaller spot to the left of the main blot. This is a bridge hybrid. Very frustrating. So two votes-- one says let it be and it'll heal, but DF-- are you saying it will spread to the rest of the plant? Or do you think it will work itself out too? I'm getting attacked/eaten at my tips by some goddamned thing-- this morning I looked and a freakin pea-sized chunk had been eaten off one of the ribs just at the very tip
I can't wait to move out of this place-- I have no real control of the environment so they're just at the mercy of nature...

The disease has to run its course. You can try topical and systemic fungicides to help it along. How extensive the damage will be depends on how much vigor the plant had to start with. They need to dry for 1+ month and maybe even get a little dehydrated to scar up. It should clear up if the plant has good vigor to start with and is fairly strong. Weak plants will probably need to be tossed out. When I say highly contagious, I mean that it easily jumps from one bridgesii to another, likely spread by filthy bugs. If you have grass hoppers or caterpillars, that's probably what is eating the tips. A garlic and capsicum pepper spray may deter them.
I had to dispose of several grafts because they were simply too far gone, I have several more that are pretty messed up from it. I have a few infected plants still but those may take awhile to clear up because I have no choice but to water them in 100+ heat, nearing record temps for this part of the year in Texas. They should be fine though. It affects Bridgesii for the most part but I have seen it on Domino cactus, and Peruvian. Hybrid or not, the mother plant is Bridgesii.
Its a no-win disease that comes from heat and water and TBH, I lose more plants in the damn heat and sunlight than I do in the winter.
Ideally, they need sunlight that is broken up by 20-30% shade cloth and let them go bone dry for a month or two.
This is a plant I have literally cooking out in the direct sun with no protection, obviously don't do that with your plants, but these were de-grafts that broke out when they were cut off. Its stopped now that they are dried out entirely, as well as have roots.
