No it's not common! Pest oil sprays will scar a cacti to death also water damage can do that and scale bugs.

Speaking of trichocereus species, I've found that if the plant is small it is easier to root in moist soil, however the older they get the harder they are so I could see how a powder type rooting hormone could help! I will try this next season with a few cuttings, some with and some without for comparison.
Also NOT speaking of astrophytums they are a real asshole to root but I've found a easy way to root the assholes! Just sit them on wet vermiculite and they root in 2 weeks! Fancy that, I've killed about 50 over the years and could have all survived if I knew wet verm was the answer! Damn lost my cv lotusland only last year cause it got too big for the stock and I had it in soil trying to root if only I knew. This info if not already known should be noted!

They will root in 5 days if you do it in straight water inside your house! Just change the water twice a day if that doesn't work with that pere I will send you 20 rooted ones, I am that sure!

that is a black fungus caused by humidity you can't see it but I can tell straight away! It somehow gives the plant a N deficiency while it has hold of it, It slows growth too but it does not appear to spread so I would use some copper sulphate and Eco Neem and then a good fertilise to get the N back in.
