Gathering for first agar attempt

I decided to at least start gathering the supplies for agar today. I found a little Asian market here in town that had the sticks of agar agar and the power form. I got both for the heck of it. Handful of packets and two sticks cost me $9 only
I am still researching on how to use the 1/4 pint mason jars in a PC. I get confused on the lids; injection port and holes to breath and whatnot. I cant afford glass petri dishes and I cant afford a flowhood or anything. I just wonder if a can use microspore tape for the holes to filter???
My other question refers to malt extract. Here is a link to a store near my college.http[url=http:www.farmhousebrewingsupply.com/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=50] Anyone have any advice on which type of malt extract I should get???
Sorry of lengthy and thank you!!

You can make lids the same as your pints or quarts. Make a SAB (still air box) go to a beer making store and buy light malt extract your questions can be answered by using the search function here as this site has all you need to know good luck!
-------------------- You gotta do what you gotta do. Sometimes you gotta munch cactus, some times you gotta munch carpet!

I have read many agar tek stuff on here. Grocery store tek and all that. I have only used 1/2 pint BRF jars and I dont do anything special to lids besides nail 4 holes in them. Never made injection ports or anything. The link I put has some different kind of malts, but I am not sure which one to buy.
EDIT: I use a still air box with shit ton germx for hands. Just cant use gloves well.

Yup. That was what I was going through. I saw that there were different recipes, so I just wasn't sure if there were better results people noticed is all.

Don't modify your lids at all for agar. 4 holes, like a PF TEK lid would just let contams in. An injection port or any filter would just be redundant, since you shouldn't be using a syringe for agar, and they don't really need GE.
You want light malt extract or extra-light malt extract. Get the powder form, not the liquid. I didn't read your link.
One tip that I can give is to just PC your jars empty, PC your agar in a quart jar or some kind of bottle, and actually pour them in your SAB. No-pour TEKs always end up with a ridiculous amount of condensation IME.
As for the formula, you want 20-30 grams of malt and 20-30 grams of agar powder per liter of water. I suggest bottled (but not distilled) water, as I've had the chlorine in my tap water keep spores from germinating. My water has a ridiculously high concentration of chlorine, so it may not be necessary for you, but it's cheap and easy enough to do.

That's actually one of the things I was confused about. On the Grocery Store Agar Tek he uses a syringe to splash water around and extract. I thought an exacto knife or something was used to cut out the parts you wanted in the agar.
Is there anything special you need to do when putting jars into a pc that have no holes in them?? Should you crack the jars a little? Just dont want them to shatter or anything.
Thank you for responses

Sounds pretty stupid to me. If there are any contams, they're coming right along with your suspension. It defeats the purpose of using agar at all.

Yep, that's exactly how it goes.

I do absolutely nothing special. Just close them up and PC at 15 PSI for a half hour.

Fantastic! Excited to get started on this one. Last question I got on the subject right now. If using a spore syringe, how much do you apply to the agar?? And do you just squirt quick on top? Or do you have to get the needle into the agar?? Just trying to be very sterile and as quick as possible

You'd use the smallest drop you possibly can. But liquid to agar is always a son of a bitch, and leaves water on top of your agar.
What I would do is sterilize a shot glass, expel 1/4cc or so of solution into that, dip a flame-sterilized inoculation loop into that and then go to your agar.

Gotcha. I will look into an inoculation loop.
Thank you for all the advice!

No problem. It'd be pretty boring around here if nobody answered questions.

I used baby food jars and they seem to work fine, but I think it would be worth the investment to get some plates

Yea, I just ordered 2 X 20 sterile petri dishes with no vents. I have some brand new 1/2 pint wide mouths that I am going to mess with until the petri get here. Got a lot of agar and supplies so figure I might as well test!!!
Never going to learn this stuff if I don't try haha
