plant sprout in manure/straw substrate?
    #18001022 - 03/23/13 08:50 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

so i have 4 monotubs, all of them are colonizing fine, but one mono, there is like a plant sprout poking through.. lol, i properly pasteurized, at the right temps, for the right amount of time, this is just weird as fuck to me, lol.... should i open up my tub, and remove it? or let it be, and just continue to let my shrooms colonize, then pick it when i fruit? or just leave it in there for good?

How did you 'properly pasteurize'?
A select few plant seeds in the world can survive temps above 140F, it's astronomically unlikely you've got one of them seeds in your substrate.

Nevertheless, I would leave the seedling alone, just because it's cool to watch it grow.
It won't hurt anything.

lol now that tm mentions it.. that posted pic i was refering to may have been in  a casing layer. Not that its relevant as casing layers get pasteurized as well.

my sub was between 145-158 degrees for 1 hour 30 mins, using a thermometer in the center of the substrate...

There are many 'airborne' seeds as well, like dandelion, oxalis, etc. Maybe one floated in there.
Can you post a pic? I can I.D most weeds.

my wifes trying to take a picture, its around maybe one inch tall, and with two small leafs, adjacent to each other. like imagine the letter T and the sprout is shaped like that....

idk if she will get a good picture though, my lid is see through, and the tub is colored, so i don't think i should open it right?

lol! perplexin, ain't it?
This happened to me several months ago, it was finally suggested here that an uncooked seed must have stuck to a jar bottom or something while mixing the tub, which makes the mose sense to me, since I cant see any living through a 90 minute pc cycle.

I hope you are not insinuating that the way the substrate was prepared has something to do with the seeds germinating.

The way the substrate was prepared should have nothing to do with grains that get sterilized. Drop em in dirt and they will germinate.

I could just be really stoned, but I actually think u r, lol.

Properly soaked/sterilized grains should not germinate like that.

Hes using a manure sub that could have any # of wild seeds in it. If not properly pasteurized i assume they can germinate?

it cant be the grains. they were PC'ed in a pressure cooker, for the full time, at 15 psi.

im most likely blaming it on the oven.

Dont take offence to that bro. i was rooting for you on it, i was just tossing it at you because of the flack you cought in the OP. I was in no way bashing you on trying to use the oven i understand what your situation was. i was just sayin.

yeah i have a seed in 2 of my tubs right now, its now a real terrarium ecosystem!  I also have no clue how they survived, this batch i did a whole 5kg brick of coir at once and it took all night to cool down, was well above 140 for hours.
