*crosses fingers* did I get lucky?
    #1799856 - 08/11/03 12:24 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

[Ah OK I know what these are... have new pics at bottom...]

found these in the 2nd cow pasture today, blued almost immediately when I snipped the bottom of the stem with scissors). Blued slower when I gently squeezed the stem.

gills - brown, adnexed
cap - about 1.5-1.75 inches wide
stem - from 1.5 to 3 inches long, kind of hollow feeling, but couple were white fibrousy inside. remnants of veil present (couple still had the veil intact).
spore print - dark purple

Are they cubes? I feel fairly confident but I am a newb to identifying fresh mushrooms, leave that to the pros - never make that decision on my own until I've gotten alot of experience. It was like I felt them when I first glanced at them... false hopes or finally struck it?

Found around 30 miles of Macon, GA. Cow pasture, couple were found in the pasture (not growing from manure that I could tell), and the others in the woods at the edge of the field, where cows also frequent. Some were growing out of manure, and some others were growing in the really rich soil under the trees.

Found couple other interesting ones, have pics but ya know the limit...
One red cap bit over inch wide, thick stem, yellow gills/stem, another huge red one 4 inches, heavy, under the cap it lookes like dark yellow foam, orange stem with pink.

Another was some beautiful white coral that I have pics of.

Those are Psilocybe cubensis, as the others have noted.

The red one we need to see photos of and get a bit more information to try and ID.

The one with the "under the cap it lookes like dark yellow foam" is a bolete. As with the other, we need a bunch more information to identify it.

Happy mushrooming!

awesome. the first two (first pic) I walked right into when I first got to the middle of the pasture. Got butterflies the instant I looked at them. But not a single one in the rest of the pasture, had to find the rest at the edge in/near the woods.

will post the others tomorrow when I get another 400k...

I use a Canon S30 digital camera on it's highest settings, and a tripod when indoors. That digital sure comes in handy!

Now I can upload again, more pics from last weekend!

Spore print from the cubensis:

Beautiful Corals:

Red one, cap ~1.5", stem ~1.5":

3/4" wide stem, 2.5" long stem, 2" wide cap:

The sharpest pic of the corals, a little larger.

(Oh yes I definitely know what these babies are, can ya hear'em calling you?)

Ah my babies!!!

Look a little like barnacles, huh?

OK a Question... what the heck are these little things? The look like cups or vases, then they just kind of fold out like a lily pad. I sense evil... are they going to starve/out populate my cubes? Or nothing to worry about?

By the way, I did a quick pasture hunt while passing thru... either above or below Seale, AL, I can't remember exactly... found maybe 5 cubes in about 20 minutes. On one cow pie, I saw these same lily-like devils.

They look like some sort of cup fungus, probably an ascomycete. A typical genus for fungi like those is Peziza. You should definitely not eat them - they should be considered poisonous until proven otherwise.

As far as competing with the mushrooms, that is a real possibility. The fact that both are fruiting at the same time may indicate that they are able to share the habitat and they may be decomposing different portions. The only way to know for sure is to keep observing.

Interesting stuff, and nice photos.

Happy mushrooming!
